Oh heavens...home-made peach cobbler. You are a lucky person, with your peach trees. Here's hoping you have a wonderful harvest!
They have Duke's? Ok that's it, I'm doing the big shop tomorrow at CM!

FutureTexan- HAR.COM is completely accurate. What you might not find accurate on the web is commute times. Often the master planned communities like to fudge those in their favor.

We are planning a move to the Katy area as soon is school is out. Does anyone know if the commute would be better on I 10 or Westpark tollroad to the Univ of Houston?

hello to all... im currently living in nj and plan on making a move in the very near future. i will be visiting houston in a few weeks as a possible destination. being a realtor here in nj, i am wondering what the real estate market is like there in houston. i will eventually get into the market there as an agent myself.
through research houston seems to be a great place, affordable and growing. im just a little worried about a few posts ive read about crime, traffic, police presence and traffic. are all of these issues ive mentioned really that bad?
also which is really a better area, spring?katy?sugarland? or the woodlands?

Yeah crime, traffic and police presence are issues here -- it's a major city so that stuff just goes with the territory. There are great areas all over town in which to live and recreate (and the sometimes random crime) and there are areas that you just know are high crime areas and you avoid them whenever possible. I would imagine it is like that in most major cities. In fact, on some other posts on this board people who came from other cities along the East Coast often claim that they feel much safer here than the city they have previously lived in.

As the old expression goes: happiness is Lubbock, Texas in your rearview mirror

Maybe when I said that I "couldn't stand" Tennessee BBQ I was overstating. BBQ is like pizza... Or is it BBQ is like sex? I can't remember. In either case, even when its bad its still good. The vinegar sauce is what threw me off of Southeast BBQ. Growing up eating slow-cooked, smokey cows slathered in molasses sauce makes it difficult to eat pigs with vinegar sauce. Just my take.

Is there anywhere in Houston or within a reasonable drive that does anything close to the East Carolina pork BBQ? One thing I do miss about living in NC...

Duke's sells for $5/jar at Central Market. AFAIK this is the only spot in Houston to get it, without ordering it online.

Crime can happen anywhere - it just happens more often in some places. There are things you can do to help minimize your status as a target, such as not leaving expensive electronics/other stuff in your car. Keep your doors locked. Get renter's insurance. It covers theft.

Traffic just depends on where you are and where you go. If you live near where you work, most places in Houston have all the basic stuff you need nearby. A lot of people get around the city while barely ever using the freeways.
