I don't usually use the Grand Parkway, but when I have on the northside it has been smooth sailing. I found myself in Sugarland this weekend, so decided to take the Parkway home back to Spring just to try it. I was very surprised to find traffic moving very slowly for a few miles as you approach I10 on a Saturday afternoon, with local traffic jumping on/off. Is this a regular occurrence? For a newly constructed road, it seemed very odd to already have this capacity issue.

The portion of 99 between 10 and 59 has been there a while, and isn't tolled, so lots of folks in that area treat it like a street rather than a freeway. My Mom lives out that way and has commented several times on how bad the traffic is much of the time.

The section of Grand Parkway between I-10 and FM 1093 is completely free. The developer of Cinco Ranch paid for it (if I'm not mistaken) when they wanted to start development on the west side of 99. They were concerned that a toll road would put a damper on sales back in the day.

That section has frequent heavy traffic.

I would say it's backed up between I-10 and 1093 more hours of the day than it is not. It's very frustrating. The last I heard, there are plans to 'widen' it by connecting the feeders where possible (i.e. between Fry and Westheimer), but they don't have funding and are hoping the local MUDs will fund it.

Katy is overbuilt.... the number of houses that went in simply overwhelms the infrastructure. The lack of other North South roads funnels everybody onto the Grand Parkway. Its not the greed of citizens not wanting to pay tolls, but the greed of developers not wanting to carve out land west of 99 for other roadways to allow people to get north and south reasonably quickly without using the Grand Parkway.

I've never found traffic anywhere on the Grand Parkway to be THAT bad...especially compared to 610 or BW8 on the west side of town (or I-10 during rush hour, for that matter).

Newsflash! Traffic in the outer suburbs.

Umm, haven't people learned that this is perfectly normal? Not that the local governments shouldn't work on improving the street grid, but can you think of a thriving new suburban area that doesn't have traffic problems? Not sure what folks were expecting.

I don't think any developer pays for roads, especially one that is almost a highway
All they have to do is call their politician friends and make them build the roads for them.

Actually this poster was more or less on point. If you read about the history of the development of the Grand Parkway, the developer donated the land to the county for this portion of the GP, with the understanding that this would be a toll-free portion. As far as footing the construction bill, I'm not sure who paid that one (county or Cinco Ranch - probably county).
