Any Reasons Not To Retire to Lake Conroe?
We're moving back to Houston area to be near our daughter in The Woodlands. Since we won't have to worry about driving to work, is there any other reason not to buy in Lake Conroe area? The houses in Walden really look nice and are so affordable. Also, are the taxes less than The Woodlands? Any area to avoid? Thanks for any information you can provide.

There's no reason not to retire here and your right the fees and taxes are going to be less $ than the Woodlands not to mention a lot less traffic. We are getting a lot of new retail coming to the area including a new mall so there will really be no reason other than visiting your family to go to the Woodlands anymore. Walden is a very nice area where you can get a lot for your money as are many other subdivisions around the lake. You can enjoy the lake and play golf at the 12 or so courses we have within a 10 mile radius. Good luck and enjoy. Low crime, low traffic, low tax rate, safe neighborhoods, lake and golf = good place to retire.

Thought of another question. Does any area of Lake Conroe have a problem with flooding?

Entire areas or isolated homes that were built at the bottom of the street without proper elevation/drainage? I know of no "areas" that are prone to flooding but I have seen a few isolated homes that were built years ago on low grades with bad drainage around them to get water in them, (no different than anywhere else). When we get lots of rain around the areas North of the lake and the lake gets to the point where it is getting high the San Jacinto River Authority opens the gates and the folks who are unfortunate enough to live down stream of the lake will get flooded. I won't name any neighborhoods as I don't want to ruffle any feathers because that would start a whole new thread...

When we were out last November, the mall by Teaswood was being graded.
I know buildings go up fast over there, how near completion is it? It looks like it's going to be pretty big (I think Penneys is going in as an anchor store?)

My only worry would be the growing of the area. If you are looking for tranquility you'll probably find it in one of the communities like Bentwater, Walden, Del Lago or April Sound but getting in and out will soon be a major pain.

It's no where near completion yet, probably will be at least a year before anybody is shopping over there.

My parents owned a lake house on Conroe for 20 years. They sold it about 3 years ago. The lake has become EXTREMELY crowded and dangerous. It just wasn't worth taking their grand kids inner tubing anymore after a couple close calls. The drift weeds are obnoxious and always getting caught up in the boats.
Going out to LBJ in Marble Falls is a much calmer lake experience.

See several new homes for sale by Legend Homes in Walden. Anybody know anything about this builder? Thanks for any help.

Extremely crowded?? I was just out on the boat today doing a little fishing and hardly saw a soul and it is a beautiful day. I suppose this statement would be true on the 4th of July weekend, Labor day etc... The lake is 22,000 acres and would have to have a thouasnd boats on it to be considered crowded. If you want crowded go to some of the lakes in Ca on any weekend or better yet try Havasu on spring break where you can literally walk across the lake on the boats... As far as the grass it's almost non existent with standing a few small coves now.
