Affordable short-term Houston rentals? (sublet, condo, crime rates)

My partner and I have had a heck of a time finding an affordable one-month rental in Houston. We don't work for Halliburton, so we can't fork over $4000 for a condo. We're thinking more like $600-1000 in a reasonably safe area on the north side. The closer to LSC-North Harris, the better, as we'll be training there. If anyone has any leads, please point us in the right direction. We're looking for something for the month of June only.

As an alternative, how long would it take to commute by car or by bus from Montrose to LSC-NH during early morning rush?

Commute would be 40-60 mins but you could take the Hardy Toll Road and this would reduce the commute considerably.

Wherever you choose, keep away from being less than one or two miles either side of I-45 to avoid the high crime rates.

You should have no problem finding somewhere to live within your budget.

Have you tried craigslist? Also check out their sublet section.
