Very frustrated...I applied for a part time teaching job and HR indicated I was rejected by the pool, so I went to HISD but could not find a person to talk with----nobody was on site. The receptionist gave me a 1-800 phone number, so I called and the person who answered the phone indicated the only way to contact HR is through email. Then I sent email, 4 days later I received response

"Thank you for your interest in HISD. In order to protect the integrity of our screening process, we cannot provide detailed information as to why a candidate is not selected. Please apply to the 2018-2019 application when it is released in mid-December to be considered."

My concern is if there is something wrong from my side, even if that just a small problem, if I don't fix it, I will be rejected forever.

Please share your thoughts.

Thanks!

Try other districts in the area. They are less bureaucratic IMO.

Agreed. I made it through the paperwork and background check and am now "eligible to be hired" by HISD, but it's gonna take work to get hired with HISD (or other districts). I figure I'll sub if need be, then make a power play to get signed on by the district ;-).

BUT, we'll get teaching jobs and we'll do well, damn it! (Motivational music plays in background)

Don't start worrying about it until mid July. Then start thinking about subbing. Yes, lots of districts hire at this time, but they still hire all summer long. Remember, many people may be telling principals they will be staying for the next year right now, but many to most saying that will eventually tell them sometime over the summer that they will not be going back. Good luck, let us known when you eventually get that job. You present yourself well,at least in writing, so I know you will get the job you want

Most places aren't going to provide specific reasons as doing so could open them up to lawsuits. Safer just to give a pat answer.

The advice may work better depending on where the OP lives in relation to HISD/within HISD. If he's in the central city it may be a long commute to the nearest non-HISD district public school. Charter schools hire too, so he/she can check if he/she can teach part time in one.

Dealing with human resources in a large organization like that one is usually a challenge. Don't give up hope--the reason you weren't selected was in all likelihood not related to your application. They get tons of applications and the just process them in a certain way.

If your resume is not up to par, then the ATS system will reject your resume automatically and you'll never know because the humans at HISD will not even have seen it. Companies will not give details due to threat of legal action.

If you can afford it, I'd hire a resume writing service to review your resume and rewrite it if needed. These people are experienced and trained to write resumes to pass the ATS system, and also bring attention to your accomplishments. You get what you pay for, so don't hire the cheapest.

For what it's worth, my wife recently went through this excercise. She is gainfully employed, but she wants to do something different, the same work, but a different industry. She found a resume writing service for executives, but the cost is 5-7K depending on what you "order". She worked out a deal with the company, and will pay about 3.5K, but hopefully it will be well worth it. They will also re-do her Linkedin resume, and profile as part of the package.

Good luck!

PS. If you are a member of Linkedin, they have a paid 'Premium' feature where you have access to a 'Premium' group which has a lot of headhunters, and professional resume writers. I have seen a lot of people post asking for tips, and critique of their resumes, and they always get professional tips, and suggestions for free. You can sign up, I think one month is free, but that may be all you need to make sure your resume is the best it can be.
