I enjoy perusing secondhand stores, and have yet to find any in the Houston area that have consistently good selection and prices.

You may want to try the Goodwill & Computer Works location near Gessner and Hwy 59 for electronics/computer stuff. I haven't been there, but the Computer Works location in Austin had a far better selection of electronics than the typical secondhand store.

Used to be that Half Price Books had a decent sized record selection. I haven't been recently and can't comment on their current selection, though.

What kind of electronics are you looking for? Honestly, you are probably better off on eBay or Craiglist. Even on Amazon under the "other" sellers.

Right now all I am looking for is a vintage stereo receiver that does 40w or more a channel from 1974 to 1978.

70s audio gear is actually exactly what I'd love to find at a Goodwill or another thrift store. I remember growing up, you'd find stacks of old stereo equipment at secondhand stores, often at very reasonable prices. Back then there was no market for the stuff.

I think nowadays, Goodwill & other shops know that lots of good 70s audio gear is valuable (and probably incorrectly assume that lots of vintage junk is valuable too). Anything good that gets donated probably walks off with employees or finds its way onto eBay or Goodwill Online.

You might be better off at garage sales or craigslist. I've recently gotten lots of dirt-cheap home-theater at garage sales, from people who were simplifying their setups (with sound bars, etc) and just wanted to dump their old stuff. Not 70s-vintage, but good-quality ~5-year-old equipment.

I have check Craigslist 4 or 5 times a day there is nothing there but junk or stuff that way overpriced. I have a good idea roughly what 70s stereo equipment is worth and not what most people are selling them for. Of the top 10 largest cities in the US Houston Craigslist is the worst. Craigslist in Austin Dallas San Antonio is way better I could get 2 items a week in those cities for a decent price. Here it would take 2 to 3 months to find anything at a decent price.
