Black African American Demographics Population

Atlanta: 1,707,913
Houston: 1,025,775

It's a 682,138 difference. I think Houston is standing its own with Atlanta AKA "The Black Mecca."

Well thats a bit of an exaggeration. Late May through Mid September is hot and humid for Houston. Rest of the time it is very pleasant.

Not true. Summer here lasts about 4 months

LOL...people are trying to say...everywhere. There are no Nigerian Hoods.
Houston is a very mixed city...it's not like NY, where you find exclusive hoods of ethnic people.
It's pretty mixed. It's really about income. That's how Houston is set up.

And Latino Mecca too. That's the difference. Not just a "Black Mecca" like in Atlanta, or "Latino Mecca" like Miami. It's pretty even among White, Latinos and Blacks, with a big Asian community as well.

That's pretty amazing for a Southern city.

I was reading one thread, and a poster (from what I took from it) said that Houston basically cheated in its AA growth as a result of Katrina. Then, other posters went on to disagree saying that many of the Katrina victims moved back to New Orleans. Even if Houston had an "advantage" in 2005-2006, I can still see Houston (from the current media) being a great place for blacks. To add a point, I bet blacks from New Orleans move to Houston all the same since it is close to Houston. Also, since the New Migration is at its climax and since Atlanta isn't what it use to be, I can see Houston (because of its oppotunities along with the other two reasons) gaining way more blacks this decade.

Well most of the non native blacks I met when I first got here were either from Louisiana or Nigeria. Houston has always had a long history with Nola.

Yes a huge bump came because of Katrina but more than three quarters moved back to NOLA to build back their city. I have met some who did come back to Houston after returning to NOLA after Katrina. Some go back and find that they can't recreate what they had before Katrina and found that they had gotten used to Houston so they returned.

But does it matter what type of hardships people are fleeing? Be it economic hardships or disastrous weather, people chose where they want to go. A lot of people chose to go to Dallas and LA after Katriana, where they chose to stay is what that matters

I'm surprised you didn't say Mississippi, Alabama, and even Georgia.
