Hi Houston,
I'm looking at moving to a home in Oak Forest on Wakefield which is between Ella and N Shepherd and a few blocks above 34th street. My concern with this area is the train that runs parallel to 34th street. Does anyone know when the train runs and if it blows it's horn near the cross streets between Ella and Shepherd? I found info on a 34th street quiet zone, but all the posts are a year or two old. I would greatly appreciate any insights on this area that you may know of!

I used to live at 31st and Alba, very near that area. The train was a non-issue. I'd say you have more to worry about from thieves than train noise. Had some tools stolen out of my truck because I left it unlocked but a few neighbors had stolen tires.

It's really a wonderful area. Just buy some locking lug nuts and forget about the train.

I'd be more concerned with the traffic and street parking nightmare in the area related to Petrol Station and the other restaurants in the immediate vicinity. The train at most will be a small nuisance the first week or two but you get used to it very quickly and won't even notice after a month. You REALLY won't notice it if you have newer windows which add a layer of sound deadening.

I do not believe that portion is covered by quiet area. There was some work done years back to extend the quiet area through GOOF but ran into bureaucratic obstacles. Train runs all hours but isn't that noticeable unless you are right on the tracks. I wouldn't buy in any of those town houses right next to tracks as the train does come through at like 3 am.
