You pretty much have two choices, DSL or cable. In most circumstances, cable is faster, but can also be quite a bit more expensive, and only available from your cable provider (Comcast for most of us). DSL is DSL, no matter who you buy from, the lines are leased from the phone company. There is satellite-based broadband as well, but it is slow and incredibly expensive.

There is no true competition in broadband service.

I think Verizon FiOS is fastest but it is not available in many areas. I use Embarq and they have very good speed for a reasonable price. Once again though not available in all areas.

A PC consultant in Sugar Land told me that Comcast is fastest, at least in the Sugar Land area.

I used to work in the telecommunication field for both the Telegiants and Cable giants. Both are fast. Both have equal negatives. First Cable is fast, however, everyone in the neighborhood shares the same line running down the pole on your street. This means if everyone decides to log on and download at the same time, your speed will drop. I for instance have slower connection every Monday evening. DSL doesn't have that problem since your telephone is a dedicated line that you don't share with anyone. Your phone line runs exclusively from your home to the central office. However, the further away you live from the central office, the slower your speed will be. And that's constant. Phone companies now offer different levels of speed at different prices. Cable is one speed at one price. Hope this helped.
