Looking to rent at first, then buy after a year.

Budget for rent:1200
To buy: 250k

We are a young family and would like a neighbor that is diverse. We are a black and mixed race family so it's important our kids feel comfortable where we move.
Definitely a kid friendly neighborhood with good schools.

Any suggestions?

I do paralegal/secretarial work, so hopefully downtown.

My husband is an auto mechanic so he is flexible.

We are not relocating due to a job change, so nothing is set in stone right now.

Houston isn't a traditional city, like one might encounter in other parts of the country. While downtown is the place where the tall buildings are, there are an equal, if not more, number of jobs, spread around in many directions, they are not all downtown. There are clusters of jobs, including law firms, in many areas around the city, so you may not need to commute to downtown.

Westheimer between the 610 loop and Beltway 8 seems to have a good number of law firms.... that might be an area to start looking for a place to work, and then look for places that you could commute to there from.

As far as neighborhoods:

Sienna Plantation it's very diverse and quite nice but a bit pricey, so it may be tricky finding something in your price range.

Richmond is also pretty diverse, and there are still a lot of communities that you can get into at your price range (Fieldstone is one)

Cypress is an area that is booming right now, don't know much about it, but I do have several friends who live over there and it's a diverse mix of people.

If you are moving here and you have no connections i.e. no family, no set job, etc. to put you in a preferred geographic location. I would you say you should move here, rent in a nice apartment complex near one of the places I listed above, and then you will figure out where you want to be within a year.

Houston is huge with hundreds of neighborhoods. Houston is also a "majority-minority" city so most everywhere is diverse except for some of the far exurbs like Kingwood which are still 80%+ white.
