Typically in Houston the main thoroughfares have medians but at the time Rice Military developed everything was more walkable. The main roads have only three lanes because of streetcars (that no longer exist) and the houses are smaller and closer to the street. I had to make a L.A. left (left on yield) at least twice in the area.

This area is next to the Museum District, which the Downtown Light Rail runs through. The Medical Center is adjacent to the University and both districts are separated by beautiful Hermann Park.

Highland Village looked like L.A. to me with the palm trees lining Westheimer. Behind the shopping center are houses on small lots. It's actually possible to live a few houses away from the Cole Haan store. Cross Westheimer and there is Houston's only Crate & Barrel and the shops in the strip center behind it. Most of those stores in the strip center are also located close by in the Galleria.
Rice Military is off Washington and Shepherd, closer to River Oaks and Memorial Park than Rice University/Hermann Park/Museum District/TMC.

LOL...Visit?? I lived there for 40 years so I think I am quite aware of what it is like...
