What's up with Bellaire?
Hello,
As a new resident of Houston, I am slowly but surely getting to know the different neighborhoods of this great city.
I drove thru Belliare quickly on my way to the Natural Museum of Science last weekend.
Looks like a nice neighborhood.
How is Bellaire? Is it a safe area? Is it affordable ($800 1br)?
Thanks!

Bellaire is a fairly expensive area to live in - It is a safe area with a good reputation

For most people, unless you want an older townhome (and I'm not sure how many of those there are), Bellaire is not very affordable. New construction is generally $500k and (well) above. Older, original homes are typically priced at lot value.
Not sure how much rental activity Bellaire has, as it is geared toward single-family homes.

No one is building ranch houses in Bellaire anymore. You can buy an old teardown for about $450K or a new McMansion with no yard for $800K and up. If you are interested in renting you could probably find some available properties but the rent will probably be about the same as the mortgage in some more affordable areas.

This is very true. The old Bellaire of ranch houses with large lots is quickly being built over.

Bellaire rents:
Bellaire Apartments - Rent an apartment in Bellaire, Texas
There aren't many apartments there. There is one listing on that site for a 1 bdrm and it says $965.

Safe (the cops are ridiculous there) with great schools (Bellaire especially in HISD), and who could forget it's an island city distinguished by it's lovely red signs. Simple answer is for affordability: Not a chance!I most certainly wouldn't reccomend it for anyone single--great place though.
