That budget will get you a garage apartment in a safe area but not an apartment in a complex in a safe area.

When I was making very little money and looking for my first place to live I drove around the museum district looking for houses with garage apartment for rent signs in their lawns. I'm not sure if they still advertise like that now but it's worth getting out there and looking.

Ah thank you! I'm looking it now.

So someone lives at the house while the tenant lives in the garage?

I'm also interested in studio or garage apartments in the Galleria area. Or should I not even bother hunting?

You might look at some of the apartments in seabrook along Repsdorph. They might be in your range and easy commute to Baytown. Seabrook is in a mandatory evacuation zone during storms but it’s still a nice area to live in.

All areas have flood potential, given the right circumstances. Find an area you like and then ask about a specific area or street. Ask nearby residents what happened during Harvey.

I suggest checking out the "rooms for rent" section of Craigslist. You might be able to find a cheap bedroom/bathroom in a nice house, and meet some new (successful) people to introduce you to the city. I see nice rooms in the $400-$600 range all the time. It's what I would do if starting over in a new city.

Thanks! I've been having some trouble. It doesn't seem to let me sort by price on there.

You may find a studio, I haven't looked. I doubt a garage apartment will be found in the Galleria area. While there may be homes that have one or a separate quarters, these folks don't need to collect extra rent and will use the space for maids, game rooms or an area for teenagers to get away.
The yorktown may have a 1 bedroom in your price range.

Try HotPads.com if Craigslist isn't really working.

Even in areas that are more affluent with upper middle class, you have crime everywhere. As a native speaking, Houston has a generally higher crime rate as you have those from poorer areas committing crime in "safer" places. People like to speak on Houston being diverse as a good thing when really it's not. Diverse to me is a safe-blanket term for ghetto or poor. 30k can get you into a 700-800 rent kind of place. There should be okay places over near I-45/8?
