I've been wondering what the most important city in Greater Houston is. In my opinion, it's probably Baytown or Pasadena given their oil refineries which drives our economy. What's your opinion?

The communities along the ship channel that house both the port and the refineries is a good guess.

Texas City has the oil refineries plus its own seaport, ranked No. 14 in the country by tonnage.

From a corporate perspective, Id have to guess the Woodlands. From an industrial perspective, Baytown.

The Woodlands (technically not an incorporated city, but nearly so) for white-collar jobs. Followed by Sugar Land.

Sort of a tie between Pasadena / Baytown / La Porte / Texas City for industry and manufacturing. Baytown may have the edge, but just barely.

Are there any edge cities in Houston? I don't know, but even the corporate prescence in The Woodlands doesn't seem nearly as big as Reston or Tyson's Corner or Irvine.

Besides Irvine, all those cities are physically closer to Washington D.C than The Woodlands to Houston. The closest I can say to what your looking for would be the Energy Corridor but most of it is in city limits although a part of it is zoned to Katy ISD schools.

Energy Corridor- 18 miles from city center, employs 105,000 people and has 26 million square feet of office space.

Westchase- 14 miles from city center, employs 88,000 people and has 16.3 million square feet of office space.

Greenspoint- 14 miles from city center, employs 50,000 people and has 10.8 million square feet of office space.

The main difference from Irvine and Tyson's is that these "edge cities" are within the city limits of the core city.
