One Night in Houston
A friend and I are stopping in Houston for one night on our way back to Dallas.
The question is... whats the best way to spend a Saturday night in Houston. My friend and I have never been to the city and would like to experience something in Houston we can't experience in Dallas.
Since we'll only be around at night, most the typical tourist attractions are probably out of the questions; but if there is anything worth noting we're willing to check it out.
Suggestions?

While that is an interesting area - I can't say that if I had one night to spend in Houston that I would want to spend it at Montrose & Westheimer. ..............
What kinds of things do you enjoy doing - what kind of sites are you interested in? Tourist things? dining? nightlife? just a look around town?
I'm trying to think of tourist attractions open at night - can't think of anything right off the bat - as I do I will post them. The Kemah Boardwalk is open - a mix of restaurants with a few interesting bars starting to open up in the area along the waterfront - a few carnival games and amusement rides. Big tourisy area. Sometimes during the warm weather they have rock the dock - outdoors with live music. But it is about 30-35 miles from the main downtown area of Houston.

So, you live in Dallas, huh? Don't help 'em! They are rivals!

Dining? Yes, we definitely would like to find a good, unique place to eat.
Nightlife? Sure, where do young (early 20s) people hang out?
Tourist things? If they're not especially cheesy or expensive they're fair game.
Can anyone describe the culture in downtown Houston? I know in Dallas the downtown proper essentially shuts down at 5pm and it certainly isn't the kind of place I'd want to visit on a Saturday night. If Houston is the same way we won't waste our time. Or, on the other hand, does Houston offer a more vibrant downtown area?

He's 20 something. I don't think carnival rides at Kemah's going to do it for him.

I'd check out the Rice Village scene. Most of this is situated along Morningside Dr. a few miles soutwest of downtown.

I would check out the nightlife in Rice Village and in Midtown (outskirts of downtown). In Rice Village eat at Benjy's and nice little bars are around it. In Midtown - Cyclone Anaya's for Mexican and hit some of the area night spots afterward. Do a google search for 002 Magazine - it lists a lot of restaurant/bars in downtown/midtown area. 002 stands for the zip code (77002) for downtown but the mag encompasses much more and a lot of midtown.

Check out the Museum of Fine Arts (mfah.org) to see if they have an evening event going on there - they usually attract a fun twenty/thirty-something crowd.
Then zip over to Midtown. Eat sushi at Fish, go for a drink at Pub Fiction, and then hang out at any of the bars/clubs in the area. They are mostly owned by the same guys so it's all much of a muchness.
