Cheap housing for student with cat?
anyone know where I can get a place to live that takes pets? I can afford about $400/mo, and need to be near UH. I will be getting a job once I get down to Houston, but till then I have 3K in the bank and financial aid coming. Also, is it better to stay in a hotel and look for places, or try to get a place while I am here in CA? Any help is greatly appreciated!

You might try and find a garage apartment in the Montrose area.

Yep, this is the way to go. Craigslist is your friend, well, one of them. Start there.
UH can be 30-40 minutes on the bus from Montrose, depending on where precisely in Montrose you are. There could be some possibilities in Upper Kirby, which is sort of like Montrose West. Don't know about Midtown but that's closer to UH - about as close as you want to get as of this writing. This might change in about 5-10 years...

I'm assuming you will be attending the U H central campus on cullen Blvd. I attended that school years ago. I had many friends who were renting rooms in the houses nearby (Varsity lane, Harvest ln, Fiesta ln) They were very innexpensive. (Two or three blocks from campus). There were also apts., not top notch that were mainly inhabited by UH students on N Macgregor Way and some on S MacGregor way near calhoun rd. (also within walking or biking distance). I hope this is of some help.

Sweety, you need to get rid of the cat and put more money on the rent. My parent's rental property just north of UH is at least $500 for a one bedroom garage apartment and one of them has been there for 8 years!

You might find a houseshare on craigslist for that price but finding a solo place to live with such a tight budget would be very, very hard.
Good luck

Pick up the campus newspapers for UH and Rice. Their classified sections usually list the kind of housing you are looking for.
