Hi Y’all,

I recently bought a used rear wheel drive car (a Mustang) and wanted to ask about driving RWD cars in Houston. I know during sunny weather and perhaps light rain it makes no difference if it is AWD/RWD/FWD, but when the inevitable heavy rains come, is it safe to drive RWDs? I’m guessing if you take it slow, drive cautiously, and preferably stay off the freeways, it should be as safe as driving a FWD (I think?).

The good news is that I still have an old front wheel drive car, so if driving in heavy rain is an issue with RWD cars, I can use that as backup in the future. Luckily we don’t have to worry about snowy winters in Houston, so that’s a relief.

Can any other RWD car owners weigh in on this?

Thanks! :-)

I've never had anything other than RWD in Houston, and haven't had issues. Antilock brakes and good tires are more relevant.

I drive RWD too and have to agree... with traction control, ABS and good tires you really shouldn't have too much to worry about. Having said that though, I always see RWD vehicles fishtail right after that first rain starts when it hasn't rained in a while. Mostly pickups, and once I saw a lady in a Town Car slide into a ditch making a left turn at an intersection. Just got to be careful when the road gets super slick like that in any vehicle, but RWD more so.

Thanks for the replies! :-)

Fortunately, the car has all-weather tires on it with thick tread, so that should also help.

Kreeyax, When you noticed fishtailing, is that more of accelerating after a stop, or turning?

RWD with high performance summer tires here and no problems whatsoever in the heavy rain.

Time to trade in that Mustang for a Camry.

Thanks, Haudi!

Lol huma, my wife has a Corolla and I have a pre-owned Mazda sedan.

BLASPHEMY! Trade in the Mustang?!? ;-)

I think it's about time I lived a little on the edge and keep the Mustang! (DENVER303TJC changes into a black leather jacket and tight jeans with a white undershirt on underneath, slicks hair back, and lights up a cigarette) ;-)

If the Mustang has traction control, which nearly all recent cars do, you shouldn't have any issues.
