I am planning on relocating to H-town area in 60-90 days. I work from home so job is not an issue. I want to find cheap rental (a small studio or 1 bedroom - that will allow a small dog) - under $700/mo. so that I can spend a month or two exploring the city to see if I want to live there permanently and buy something later. What areas/neighborhoods are safe for a single woman, but that are affordable (even if temporary). Or at least list areas to avoid.

After I get to Houston, then I will figure the rest out from there.

If you're expecting to find a decent place for $700 or under, expect to be in the ghetto.

Grab it if you're really short. Looks like ceiling is only height of door.

There are garage apartments and carriage house style apartments (like the one already shown) surrounding Rice and St. Thomas in that price range that are generally meant for students. Most of them are only advertised by street sign. Expect them to be hot and noisy with only the basic necessities, but the location is about as good as it gets in Houston. I lived in several in my college years and had a great time. They might be a little undignified for a grown-up.

Noisy meaning close to 59 / 288. There is one of those on HAR right now.
