Midtown is two minutes from Montrose and is fairly clean and safe. Avoid the area around the bus station and you'll be fine. There are some fabulous apartments in midtown, e.g. Block334.

I have an empty 1-bedroom garage apartment in the back of my Montrose home that I don't use. I live less than 1 blk from Westheimer. Alas, Montrose is not as weird as it used to be. My area is more gritty city than genteel parts like the Heights or Rice U.

From the names one might think in the Needville or Wild Peach Village areas of the greater Houston metro area.

Good luck with your treatment. Midtown is not unsafe it is more homeless and car break ins. Parts are very walkable even at night. You may find a short term rental in DT. Lots of new luxury high rises. try upper kirby and Rice/Medical center areas.

We stayed for 4 weeks at The Reside near the medical center this past summer when we moved to Houston from Hawaii and were waiting on our household goods to be shipped. They have furnished 1, 2 and 3br apartments. The apartments come with everything you might need except your food and clothes. Has a washer/dryer, full kitchen, linens, towels, WiFi, etc. If you stay over 30 days you get a break on the daily rate. It's safe (gated), across from a Kroger, and has a small workout room and a pool. We felt quite safe there and we had a child and pet. Our cost for 2 BR staying over a month was $100/nt.

We also looked at AirBNBs - they offer good rates.
