My family and I are African American. We are looking to move but cannot make a decision. My husband work as a truck driver while I work in IT. We have two children ages 1 and 6. We are looking for a family oriented city where there are tons of things to do. We are also looking for areas where we are around an even amount of diversity for the kids. What are you thoughts on Dallas vs Houston?

You will feel comfortable in either city. Make it about the jobs.

Houston and Dallas are more similar than they are different, as y'all can find good jobs in both cities. Both have plenty to do, diverse, but for blacks, Houston has the edge.

Agree with this.

Incidentally, there is an active thread in the Texas forum right now that I think offers an excellent comparison and contrast between Houston and Dallas.

A Reflection of Houston and Dallas after years in both....

About the same but more diversity in Houston. More humid in Houston. Better Mexican food in Houston.

Actually I dont know that I agree with that last one. In my experience it depends on how you define it. The Tex-Mex is most definitely better in Houston but in terms of authentic Mex, its very much the same.

I’ll put in my usual plug for Fort Worth if you haven’t looked there. If you live on the east side (Hadley / Euless / Bedford is a great mid-income area) you’ll have good schools, good diversity, and all the benefits of Dallas and Fort Worth.

Strictly between Dallas and Houston, I prefer Houston as a city but Dallas for the climate. I’m not positive on this, but I’d bet Dallas has more diversity of jobs in the IT secter.

While there should be jobs in either metro, DFW is known both as the logistics (read: trucking) capital of TX and the east side of that metro is one of Texas' two main "tech" areas (the other being Austin). Houston is expanding quickly in the first sector but very much lags in the second (our "tech" is mostly embedded in the oil & gas and medical/health care industries).
