I'm planning to fly from IAH for a 3 hour flight to Cali on Spirit. I heard that the check in line is long and that you should get to the airport at least 3 hours ahead.

I would check website and follow their direction. They are a no frills company and I am sure quick to bump you if you do not follow all the rules. Make sure to check in online too.

I am sure everyone's experiences will vary but I take advantage of Spirit sales sometimes and have had very little trouble. Had a few delays on some flights but nothing over an hour if memory serves. The check in line can definitely be a mess so allow some extra time. Never used Spirit to California so can't comment there. I would suggest to avoid peak times to reduce the delays in the check in line. Also the early and late flights tend to be cheapest in my experience\flights.

Make sure your luggage is less than 40 pounds or you will be charged an extra fee. The terminal for Spirit is A. To save time, in Terminal A, go to the TSA North instead of TSA South.

Since the staff is expected to fulfill multiple roles, you may end up waiting for them to show up. Certainly allow the full two hours. If you can avoid checking a bag, that is the way to go. Read the rules closely, but it is surprising what you can do with that allowed personal bag if a short trip.
