Yep. The NE section was not done until at least the mid 2000s. Definitely not the 90s as someone posted.

I found this link, and second picture down, it shows what I'm talking about. And that was from 2001.

Actually it was finished in 2011.

On February 26, 2011, construction of the main lanes between Interstate 69/U.S. Highway 59 (Eastex Freeway) and U.S. Highway 90 (Crosby Freeway) was completed, thus completing the entire Beltway system.

The Beltway becomes EZ Tag only at Mesa Rd. Gun it to get in the exit right lane. I don't know when it becomes pay again but the EZ Tag only threw me for a loop the first time I drove it.

I looked on the maps and it said "toll plaza" which I took to mean, like the Plaza before Veterans and 45. EZ Tag Plaza and 3 lanes of play.

Not some Gateway Arch looking thing that's EZ Tag only. I thought I kept missing the plaza they should call it something else.

It's been years but I use to do the 45 to 598 Beltway commute and it was a hot mess near Greenspoint and the Hardy Toll narrowing to 2 lanes then so much construction. I don't know if it's clear now but they were widening lanes around Greenspoint and it was just awful. Not as bad as the parking lot on the other side but still bad.

In the early 2000s I'd get sent from time to time to a football game at CE King High School up that way. You crossed the bridge at the ship channel, passed a toll plaza and then it suddenly turned into what looked like the Beltway anywhere else, but the mainlanes missing with only the feeder lanes there. Very little traffic north of 10.

Hopefully the rental car will have the EZ tag and be reasonable (not have exorbitant fees). Otherwise, I'll be looking for the toll booths on the east side of the toll way (b/w I-45 and IAH). If I had my vehicle, it'd be no issue (I have an EZ Tag).

I remember voting to build the BW8 back in the 1980's. Main claim was after 10 years it would be paid for and tolls would go away...
suckered again
