Make sure your driver's license and vehicle location and home addresses all match to get the homestead exemption. Our vehicle locations didn't match so we're in the process of changing that now. Changing your mailing address for vehicle registration and DL doesn't change your vehicle location (go figure).

Don't forget to look at the OVERALL tax situation for Texas, too. Property taxes, yes, you have that to assess to various degrees but, for out of staters to note, there is NO state income tax.
