Curious about what it currently costs to have a average to nice in-ground pool installed? Monthly maintenance cost?

Depends on so many factors... I've been looking at this recently. Seems in Houston $50-60k is about average for a nice pool with spa. A lot of the cost depends on the materials used, amount of decking, precise depth/perimeter etc etc but as a general figure I think that's a pretty fair ballpark amount.

They start at around $40k... (This is all for an inground, gunite pool)

Yea, you need to call a pool company to get a ballpark. The size of the pool, materials, etc can make a pool cost 30K-1million. Maintenance will depend on the size of the pool and equipment.

I put one in about 1.5 years ago - its about 11,000 gallons - its a small pool, but its got great water features, a good size patio, etc...but no spa. It was about $40,000 - its 13 x 20 with an 8 x 8 tanning ledge, baja shelf, kiddiepool -whatever you want to call it.

No heater - but all the rest of the bells/whistles - remotes, etc. Prices for my exact pool ranged from $35,000 all the way to $90,000 depending on who was building it....I had 5 bids and I provided the specs.

There is a pool in River Oaks that looks like a lake. You can clearly see it on Google Maps. I think you could drive a waverunner in it.

Thanks for the info.

I was thinking somewhere around $50k, also.

Is it worth it to put a heater in? What is the cost of heating an average sized pool per month?

Couple hundred in gas during the coldest months. No heating necessary in the summer.

Maintenance, figure another 75-150 in electricity costs and chemicals per month.

I should have heated it. My pool is relatively small and well shaded so it changes temperatures pretty rapidly in the cold, but takes a long time to warm up. On the upside, when other pools are in the 90's mine is in the mid 80's and quite comfortable.

Water temperature in my pool yesterday was 66...that is still pretty brisk when you jump in and its the middle of April......The heater was only $800-$1000...I just did not have a spa, so I did not do a heater. By mid May Im usually into the upper 70's.

The more water features you have that break the surface of the water, like a waterfall, etc the cooler the pool will be. Evaporative cooling is quite amazing in the dead of the summer. When run at night you can lower the pool temp several degrees....downside being you have to add more water b/c it evaporated.

It's more likely you'll need a pool cooler in the summer when the water temps are 90+ for weeks/months on end.

Agreed! When the pool is in the upper 90s in the summer you'll wish it was 10 degrees or more cooler!
