This year is to be a huge year for Rice University. The ION is scheduled to open soon, and the Music Perfomance Hall as well. Additionally, the Social Sciences Building just opened a few weeks ago. When Rice invests in a field, it goes BIG. In 2017, they opened the Moody Center for the Arts and now the Music Perfomance Hall, which is the priciest concert-specific building in any university for now. They quickly turned their arts program into one of the best in the country with these two new buildings plus what was already there.

But despite all the investments in the arts, all eyes are on their technology hub, the Ion who's completion is starting to near. Whether Turner helped or not, Houston has indeed had a tech surge in his tenure. Specifically, AI based. From the million dollar tech start up to Amazon moving here, etc. Now the Ion opens. UH already opened their own innovation center for competition. As we know, competition is always great.

What do you expect from the Ion?

I’m hoping that the ION results in a total redevelopment of Richmond Ave between Spur 527 and Montrose Blvd. Almost all storefronts on that stretch are vacant.

That’s the least of the expectations. Redevelopment is a cycle and that area was eventually going to get hit.

It’s mostly because I own property in that area, so I’m especially interested.
