Smile Is Houston Hotter than Florida?

Hello I have been interested in relocating to Houston from Florida. I have not been to the Houston area yet but I hear that the heat is a lot worse than Florida is that true?

I've never been there, but probably not.
From what I've heard it rarely goes above 100 F; mid-high 90's might be common though.
(the proximity to the Gulf keeps extreme temps down but humidity up)

Someone else on the forum from Memphis TN, thought it was just as hot as Memphis TN, but nicer since it had more wind than Memphis.

(but you should wait to hear from someone who's been to both places)

BTW, I noticed a smile in front of your post; were you hoping it'd be hotter?

They're really about the same, with Florida being slightly more humid...if you can even get more humid...

Houston btw, could be in Florida...landscape-wise...you could drop Houston in Florida and not know the difference. Culturally, it's a bit different...but has similarities - especially to Northern FLA.

Absolutely , not it is about the same . I live near Miami and the summers here are regularly 92- 95 degrees with mind numbing humidity just like Houston .

The winters are cooler in Houston , though !!

In all the weather and bugs situation are about the same in Houston and South Florida

Houston typically has about 1 to 7 days of temp exceeding 100. I can only remember a couple of summers when this hasnt happened. Even then, 99 degrees were not uncommon. I rarely, if ever, heard about 100 degree days in Miami.

Oh yea, 95% humidity is the norm. I like Houston, but I got to tell you the truth. From April thru September, IT IS HOT and HUMID, PERIOD!

The Hispanics in South Florida are much more diverse than in Houston , we have White hispanics , Black hispanics , Indian or Indigeneous Hispanics and they seem to have quite a bit more economic clout and purchasing power than in Houston .

The landscape is somewhat similar , flat , many trees , very green , and very tropical . Heat and humidity are about the same ,as is the "bugs " factor . Where South Florida and specifically Miami I think beats Houston is the architecture which is Spanish or Mediterranean , nicer new high rise condos , zoning and mainly the beaches , we have more of a European feel in Miami .

Houston is booming and is doing some great new proyects , including some high rises in Uptown , and Galveston that will rival Miami Beach , but still ........... ahhh , the beaches and bikinis in Miami !!

Unfortunately the crime rates in Houston and South Florida are both very high and you will read daily about murders , drive bys and car jackings in both the Houston Chronicle and Miami Herald . Both our professional football teams suck , but Houston is a better sports town .

And do not forget the Argentines , Uruguayans , Chileans and some Brazilians
who bring a European aura to the Miami Beach area !!

I've never been to Florida, but I can say if you're trying to escape the heat and humidity don't come here. It is unbearable to me here in the summer. Cool weather here is very rare. In the winter time it can anything from 85 to 35, you just never know what you'll get, but in the summer you do know you get HOT HOT weather.

Right now in South Florida it is 83 degrees with 74% humidity , from what I understand it is cooler in Houston . I have been to Houston many , many times in Summer , Fall and Winter and it is about the same as Miami in Summer , but cooler in the Fall and Winter .

One big difference here in South Florida is that we do get a strong Atlantic breeze here in the Summer so it might make it feel a little cooler at times than in Houston . Houstonians complain constantly about the heat and humidity , but we have it pretty bad down here as well .

You know the humidity is hovering, when you fly in to see a huge smog ball in Houston.

If you live in the Houston area, it will be much hotter than in Miami then. There is no breeze in Houston. Why? Because it's actually inland. Think about what it is like 20-30 miles from the coast in Florida.

Galveston is the exception but look on a map. It is really not anywhere near Houston. And frankly, not many people live there... 99% of the population is inland...

It gets up into the 100's as others have said and it is very humid. Again, given that there is little air movement in the summer, it gets unbearably hot. But then boiling hot is boiling hot right? Might be splitting hairs here but I think the air movement thing is the kicker...
