We did it a couple Christmas ago, we stayed in Amarillo at one my wife's long time friend home so not that bad. Then on way back drove straight from Santa Fe to Houston. Felt good to sleep in own bed.

Santa Fe, NM is fun.

Ive done the Houston to a mountain home family has had for decades. Its about 100 miles north of Santa Fe. Ive done it in on day a number of times...not a hard drive to me. Getting sleepy is not an issue for me even at my advance age now. Fastest wIy to go is I45 to f US287 just south of Dallas. I. take I40 out of Amarillo then head NW on small NM state highways as I enter NM. This is not the route to SF to saves about 35 miles going to near Angel Fire even though it includes 9 miles of dirt or now gravel goad thru a pass in the mountains. This trip is about 875 miles but can be done in a day if one pushes it.

OP let us know if you did the trip now that its a while after you posted
