cumberland crossing
I have been reading on this forum about new caney schools and porter, tx and it makes me very nervous. We are moving to Porter from Shreveport, LA because of a job transfer. We are building in cumberland crossing subdivision and my children will be going to Robert Crippen elementary. Can someone please give me info on this area, hopefully good info. I really felt like we found a great place to live because it seems to be quiet and away from city traffic.

The New Caney school district may not be the best in the Houston area, but it still exceeds Shreveport schools IMO. I'm sure others can be more specific.

Any Texas school is better than Louisiana schools. I'm thrilled to move back to Texas. What makes New Caney not so great?

New Caney is just a more rural area so you get more of a "redneck" vibe there but it also avoids some issues you have in more urban environments.

We were definitely trying to avoid some of the urban problems or nusances and I like the rural feel although we are far from redneck. I am just hoping we won't regret our decision to build in that area. Thanks for your reply.

I honestly don't think you will regret it. I grew up in the Waskom area (my mom would not tolerate LA schools) and am very familiar with Shreveport (was there this past weekend), New Caney/Porter will be very comfortable for you. It is rural but has easy access to ammenities and activities for the family.

You will love Porter!! Don't worry about it being too "Red Neck"-Over 75% of the people have "White Collar" jobs!

Aren't things growing out towards Porter? Are they going to clean up the trailer park areas that I have read about? I haven't seen any when going to our subdivision but then again I haven't really driven through Porter.

Kingwood and Porter are pretty much growing into each other. If you want a good representation of the difference drive along North Park Dr. sometime starting in Kingwood, it is tree lined and well manicured with stores set far back in nice brick buildings. As soon as you hit the border with Porter all the trees are clearcut away and you have big empty dirt lots filled with trash followed by ugly little siding storefronts 5 feet back from the road.
