They are common and nasty little things but IMO, it beats rats in Boston area dining halls!

Yes! I'm happy to see these dead cockroaches after I squat 'em. Then I call my bug man once a year, he does miracles!

These roaches can fly a good 10 feet or so, especially when startled or cornered. These roaches are very common and, yes, they are vile. A local museum even offered cash for people's cockroaches: Houstonist: Houston Museum of Natural History Wants to Buy Your Roach
AAAAH! NOOOO!!!

I hate roaches. Those antennae... (shudder, dry heave) When I was about 10 years old one of these flew around a corner and landed on my ear. I've been completely irrationally phobic ever since.

What's that? There's a huge spider on my neck? No problem. I scoff at wasps and yellowjackets. Scorpion? Mom, can we keep him? But if there is a roach on my foot I'm going to strip naked and run through the street as though my head was on fire (ever seen Me, Myself and Irene?).

Apparently they will occasionally bite. Its never happened to me but I know a number of people who swear up and down that they were bitten by cockroaches. They also stand up on their hind legs to run. Its hideous.

Get some boric acid powder. It's cheap and works wonders.

Agreed. When I remodeled my house I stripped about 75% of the interior down to the studs. Every horizontal surface received a liberal coating of boric acid and I am yet to see a roach inside the house. Plenty in the backyard, however.

Well the other day I think I had my first encouter with these vile creatures. It had to be the largest roach I've ever seen, if that's what it was. It wasn't brown or black like most roaches. It had a maroonish/redish sort of color to it. It might have just been the light reflecting on it. It scared the bageezes out of me. The antennas looked many times larger than the body. These bugs are kind of new for me after living in seattle for 3 years. Not too many bug issues there. I didn't see one roach the whole 3 years there. I'm also having problems with these little nats flying around my sink. Any suggestions for those?

That happens when you get accumulated vegetable matter in your disposer. Every so often put a dab of dish soap down the drain with the disposer and water running.

Mr. Jimboburnsy,
Sorry about the ear thing-it would freak the begeezus out of me too. Word of caution when channel surfing-especailly sci-fi channel. DO NOT WATCH STAR-TREK II-Wrath of Khan! Poor chekov. He survived and now has a bug phobia bigger than all of texas.
Y'all have cicadas? The flying roach palmetto's remind me of the cicada's-the annoying 17 year ones, not the symphonic, mellow annual ones up in N. Illinois. Thanks for all the bug tips. Good info if job and move come through.
