Detroiter Needs Viewpoint Of Houston!!
Hello: I am new to this type of Forum and older than most of the people on it, but I am seeking a fresh Viewpoint. That is why I decided to join this Forum. I am considering moving either to Houston, Texas or to Marietta, Georgia from Detroit, Michigan. These two locations were suggestions per my former G.M. co-workers. My position at G.M. has been out-sourced and I am searching for a new life adventure. I am a Widow, with 3 daughters whom are married and 6 grandchildren. I am a African-American Woman. I have an active lifestyle that includes Ballroom Dancing, Theatre's for Concerts and Plays. I would like a city with good entertainment, good shopping, not too rural, upbeat and fun. I want to date and marry again so socializing is very important to me. I have a degree in Social Work and I am seeking a part-time job. I am interested in leasing/purchasing a ranch or Condo in a diverse area because my family is Interracial. What say you Houston!!..Any suggestions you give will be considered seriously. Have a Bless Day!!

I think you would like Houston, it has all the things you are looking for.
I don't know how it compares to Georgia but there may be more active things to do here since it is such a large city. As a social worker you should have no problem finding a job and the interracial family is also pretty common here.
Perhaps you should visit both places and learn about them I am sure someone on the board can speak more of the "city" things to do since I am more of a suburban girl.

SkyeAnjel: Thank you so very much for your post. I am going to visit Houston this summer. Please tell me does it get excessively Hot there? Over 102 degrees? I have a friend who just moved to a city call Katy this Spring. He is new to Houston also, so he will experience it first hand this year. He said that this lease was very reasonable for a two bedroom Condo. He is going to purchase a home next year and he said he had viewed homes in the $150,000.00 price range. Since I am a Widow and my children will continue to reside in Detroit, I do not want to pay as much for a home. Any location suggestions for about $90,000.00?!

In my area (Klein) you could possibly pick up a home for that price in Colony creek or memorial chase. They are out there, it just takes some digging.
This is a great school district out here (klein isd) and itis a great part of town. It does get hot in Houston but your kids will love it, they can swim most of the year. It can get to 102 but thats not very often although it does "feel" like 102 quite a bit with the humidity. They will put out heat warnings and we do have air conditioning so it really isn't a big deal.
You can also get a home in Spring, zoned to Spring schools(Spring High) for a really good price and the schools are good as long as you are not zoned to Westfield High. The schools are not as good as Klein but I went to Spring myself and have a stepdaughter who just graduated from Spring High.
I know that area very well as I grew up there and it is great for starter homes and you will do better then in Klein although I would check Klein first.
This is all suburban here so you would not be in the city and will be about 30 minutes north of the city on a VERY good day with our traffic.
This board will help you alot because there are people from all over who can talk about their part of town and you can read through previous posts.
Spring is also about 20 minute south of THe Woodlands.

Detroiter too
Hey there, I am in Detroit too and planning to move to Houston in the next 3 months. I found a great realtor in Houston, got pre approved for a mortgage and I am looking in the Jersey City area. I visited Houston in March and fell in love with downtown and also the woodlands area. It was so sparkling clean and the roads are amazing compared to our hometown. Plus the jobs there seem to be paying about the same as Michigan. I'm in the I.T. field. What I found out after a lot of research is that a home in the suburbs of Detroit is $200,000+ for a 4 bedroom and in the area of Houston I am looking it is $130,000. Wow!
So fellow Detroiter, lets get outta here! LOL!

Tinnie, it is exciting to relocate and you will like it here. The job market is good and the sun shines most of the time, no more snow, we pull out our winter gear when it gets below 70...it's a whole new world LOL! You can have the city, or the suburbs or the country whatever you want and none of it is very far from the other, oh and the beach, although not as pretty as in other places. People are friendly for the most part (except when they have a sign in front of them that says "customer service" LOL).

Ok, yes it does get hot here. Rarely over 100 degrees. It can be quite humid. But I have grown used to it over the years. In fact, I get cold when it gets under 65. :-) Seriously, you will have a hot summer to contend with, but a gorgeous spring. Oh My god, Spring here is the best in the world!!!! And of course winter can be quite cold, all 3 days of it. And fall is very nice as well (just don't look for changing leaves). The area is thriving! We welcome all newcomers from all walks of life. Its what makes Houston, Houston.

RYNNAKAT: God Bless you on your wonderful move!! This was a great decision on your part!! Anyone that has lived in Detroit knows that the joy of leaving here is almost overwheming!! I am a much older woman than you, and I am really tired of being called
a "wh---e" like most women are called in this city. College educated women it seems are attacked more!! My generation will never understand or except this behavior!! I don't understand why it is so blatant. I have learned to ignore it because I know that it is just ignorant. What a nice jester for you to leave this post. Houston is one of the cites that comes highly recommended by many in Detroit. Detroit is/was a great city but so much is happening now that I have decided to venture out to find another middle-class hub. My plan to move to Houston will benefit my grandchildren who will visit me and they need to make choices in their lives and I personally feel that they need to be aware that other cities may offer them more than the Detroit Metro Area.
Thank you every so much for your wonderful information. I know that vile behavior is everywhere, but in depressed areas, more apathy is voiced. My decision to move has been decided many years ago. I am really looking forward to this move!! Have a Bless Day!!
