Young, single, black woman on the move...
Hey to all,
I am in my late 20s, from the midwest and strongly considering a move to Houston. I have sales background so I'm not worried about finding a job, but I would like to purchase a home, go back to school for MBA, advance my career, and eventually settle down/get married.
Is Houston the place for me? If so, I'd love to hear your thoughts and recommendations on places to live, hang out, etc.
Thanks in advance.

Houston has a very strong economy, low housing costs, and lots to do. Plus there would be plenty of places to pursue your MBA, (Rice, U of H, St. Thomas, TSU)

H-town is a very diverse city and its within the bible belt. Therefore, a lot of progressive black churches plus many others to choose from.
There is culture in Houston though the culture here is different than other places. Even our brand of hip-hop music is unlike other areas. Richmond Ave, Galleria, Downtown are well known areas where the youngsters and clubbers hang out. But there are many others too since Houston is very huge and spread out
Overall, echoing what Mobster said, Houston is a good place for a young person with confidence to live and settle down.

From a black perspective, Houston would be good for you. If you went to TSU or U Of H, you would want to live in 3rd Ward. The thing about 3rd Ward is that it's made up of 3 sections: middle/upper-class, working class/working poor & deeply impoverished. TSU and U Of Houston are located in the Third Ward Bottom, which is the extreme ghetto part of the district.

Thanks to all for your responses.
I have two more questions:
1.) An acquaintance of mine suggested that I look at Missouri City and Stafford. With my circumstances in mind, what are those areas like? How is the commute?
2.) What is townhome/condo market like in Houston? Are they a dime a dozen? Three years from now, would I have a hard time selling it because the supply exceeds the demand?

Missouri City is more of a family area. It's similar to Sugar Land. Stafford is mostly business and not much residential. They are suburbs and you'd have a commute if you were going to college.
If I were young and single, I wouldn't want to live in any of those... Houston is the better better bet. Galleria area, Midtown, or another close-in area.

Not really, besides I'm somewhat biased since my sister is in the Austin area also.

Houston will be a great place for you sister....There is a huge network of middle and upper class blacks in Houston, a great singles scence, multiple churches and oppurtunities to choose from. I would highly recommend Houston as a place to live.
