Hi,

I am a F2 visa holder, and if I want to work here, where can I go and apply for a work permit?

Many thanks.

As said above, you may only work legally with a work permit (H1 or H2, perhaps). These visas are most often secured after you get a job offer and after you've met conditions for employment.

Check with the immigration office for the particulars on requirement and changing status.

BTW, it is not advisable to avoid the change as the consequences are forfeiture of your F visa, deportment and the inability to return to the US for 2 years.

2 years was the old time. I've heard that 5-10 years is the newer norm!

Below is what I found on the web:

F2 Visa Details: An F2 visa may be obtained by an F1 visa holder’s spouse and minor children. An F2 visa holder may remain in the US as long as the F1 holder remains in legal status. An F2 visa holder may change his or her status in the US.

Employment: An F2 visa holder may not accept employment. He or she must obtain a work visa.

Study: An F2 visa holder may engage in full or part time study.

For whom is an F2 Visa appropriate?
Spouse and children of F1 visa holders who wish to visit or accompany the F1 visa holder to the United States.

What are the requirements for obtaining an F2 Visa?
The spouse and minor children accompanying an F-1 student are eligible for admission in F-2 status if the student is admitted in F-1 status. The spouse and minor children following-to-join an F-1 student are eligible for admission to the United States in F-2 status if they are able to demonstrate that the F-1 student has been admitted and is, or will be within 30 days, enrolled in a full course of study, or engaged in approved practical training following completion of studies.

You can't legally work in the US with an F2 visa. Changing your status while physically present in the US isn't possible.

Return to your home country, then apply for a different status.

Please do not work illegally in the United States.

There are ways of transitioning your visa and/or redirecting them. Moderator cut: advertising

Not true. If you have a dependent visa and you get sponsorship for a work visa you can get it transfered without returning to your home country.
