Default Movin to Houston from San Antonio! need advise

Hello all,

what a great resource this forum is!

I am a California native who has been living in San Antonio for the last 3 years. My new job will be located off of Beltway 8, in between Hardy & JFK.

I will be renting at first, so i'm looking for a neighborhood that is:

a) Close to my job. 15-20mins commute I guess. plus/minus 10mins.

b) Close to downtown. (hmmm, how bout half way in between my job and downtown)

c) of course safe.

Not sure if i'm going to do the "rent a room" thing first or rent an apartment. i just want to be economical for once in my life lol

Also, eventually my gf will be moving to Houston by the end of the year. she really liked the fact that San Antonio always had things going on downtown during the day that were fun for the whole family (i.e. festivals, market square, river walk, tourists stuff). Does Houston have those kind of things going on every week?

thanks in advance!

Lindale Park is probably the best thing I can think of that's kind of between Hardy/JFK (Greenspoint area) and downtown.

It may be closer to 20-30 minutes depending on the way traffic goes on any given day, but you could rent an apartment inside the loop and commute out to work. Hardy Toll Road would be the quickest way to go but as the name says, it's a toll road. This is also going to burn a gallon or two of gas round-trip every day, depending on what you're driving.

San Antonio is more tourist-driven than Houston, but I get the feeling you're coming here to be more than a tourist. Downtown needs some work but it's on the right track, and there's plenty to do in the city - you just might have to do some driving to see it all.

As for safety - your car is at more risk than you are, and you're more likely to get killed or injured in a traffic accident than you are as a victim of crime. Use a little common sense and you can lower the chances of having either one happen.

I would try to stay inside of loop 610. Anywhere west of Studewood and north of I-10 would probably be a good place to look. That area has mostly houses, but there are also some apartments complexes.
