I just went to East Beach in Galveston today and loved it. This was my first chance since moving here in January. There were thousands of people there and the weather, water, sand and waves were perfect.
I heard Galveston beaches have a reputation for not having waves but having dirty water and not having nice sand. I can tell you that I found none of this to be true. Today the waves were about 3-4 feet high which is a good heigth for a beach. I don't know maybe I went on a good day for waves. We were catching the big waves on a boogie board. The sand was powdery and light colored at East Beach and the water was warm. I will say that the water is bit murky but thousands of people were in it. Stewart beach was the same. I don't know why these beaches don't get more credit. I would say that this beach rivals any beach in the mid Atlantic and in ways was better than California beaches because you could at least get in the water without freezing. No it was not as pretty as most beaches in Florida and California but I think a lot of that is because it is not nicely landscaped with Palm Trees, has no boardwalk and the cars driving on the sand compacts it. |

I agree with everything you said. So many people bad mouth Galveston beach. I love it for all the reasons you said and I dont even care about the waves.

This is good to know. We considered moving to Galveston when we retire but I heard the beach wasn't good and the town was run down. Now we are considering Port Aransas, Ingleside Texas and we went there this weekend. I thought the water was a bit merky also but it was very warm and the sand was nice. So maybe Texas beaches aren't so bad?

I went a few weeks ago and enjoyed it as well. You can even have a few drinks at the beach without any harrassment from the po po's. Is the beach open all night or do you have to leave after a certain time? I've only been during the day.

If you like Galveston, check out the sand building castle contest on East Beach, Galveston. Judging is on Saturday, but Sunday is also a good day to check out the 80 or so entries. It's May 31/June 1 this year. Incredible stuff.

I rather despised working there (getting to park on the causeway for a half hour after getting off at midnight is not high on my Top Things I've Done In Life list, and that helped none) but the island's fun to visit. I haven't been out on the beach in awhile (last time I was down there it suddenly started raining like hell like it's prone to do here, so no beach) but it surely looked better than I used to remember it. When I was a kid I saw it as barely a step up from the Texas City D1ke (the Censortron won't let me spell out the name of the *World's Longest Man-Made Fishing Pier* - the man always keepin' me down)
I'd never live there, though. Not only do I generally like to live where the tourists aren't, but I don't want to be where they're calling for evacuations when a hurricane passes through the Florida Keys (like Rita). |

You say the water is murky? We have friends looking to move to Houston and visit the Galveston beach. They are used to the turquoise gulf waters in Florida. Is the water in TX black? brown? dk blue? If you are standing in the water, can you see your legs or feet?
Thanks! |
