Will be moving to Houston in 2 month from southern CA. I wonder if someone has suggestions for good places to live and what the going rental rates are?

I will be working in downtown, right beside tranquility park. I am married, but no children yet. Spouse is still looking for job.

I thought we could live in some nice high rise 2 bd kind of thing close to my work to cut commute time. In a year or so, once we figure out where we eventually want to settle down I want to look for a place to buy.

What can I expect rental wise? And what are good areas to live that are close to downtown? Any pointers would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

You're perfect candidates for Midtown or Rice Military. Even Upper Kirby isn't that far away. Just jump on Allen Parkway/Memorial Drive and it'll shoot you home. I'm drawing a blank on high-rises in these areas, they are mostly mid-rise apartments, condos, and townhouses, but I'd focus my search around these areas if I were you. Unless money were not an object, in which case I'd consider One Park Place - Houston's Only Downtown Luxury Rental High-Rise. It's not completed yet, but knowing Houston it should be finished in a week. (okay, I'm exaggerating, but only a little ) There's also Mosaic of Houston in the Museum District which is five minutes, if that, from downtown by car. Living in these areas will put you close to everything you'll want to be close to. And the Uptown/Galleria area, but it's farther away from downtown, naturally. Check out Houston Architecture Info Forum. A wealth of information on Houston neighborhoods over there.

I agree with everything the last poster said, but want to add that you can get a nice high rise apartment overlooking Hermann park and be only a few minutes from downtown. Hermann park is one of Houston's two major parks and very popular. The high rise views are very nice in that part of town. I knew someone who lived in one of those and they loved it. Just a wild guess, but I'm thinking you could get an apartment for fifteen hundred a month or so. Call an agent and ask about these properties if it sounds like what you are looking for.
