I'm looking to leave the city of Detroit to move to Texas in the August or early fall. I love my city however, jobs aren't popping off here and I need a change.

I need to know if anyone could help answer some of my questions.
1.)Coming from a city that is mainly Blacks on one side of town and whites on another. Is Texas very diverse?

2. I've been hearing nothing but wonderful things about houston and how I would love it, but does the city go to sleep very early? I'm use to clubs/bars/resturants staying open until like 2am so will things be shut down at like midnight?

3.I want to go back to school to pursue my MBA in Journalism will I have a great pick of schools that will fit well with what I'm looking to stuy?

4. How is the night life? Clubs/Parties/events Honestly I go out here in Detroit, but when someone is hosting a party and you get there it's the same old same old. So what makes Houstons night life stand out?

I know these questions my be a little strange, but I need someone's view who lives there. I'm looking to surround myself with a diverse area. I know moving to another city is a big thing, and all the questions in the world can't give you peace of mind until you actually experince it for yourself. But any all answer will help me understand houston as a whole a lot better.

Thanks
MsCarmel ~ Detroit

Most of Houston is diverse with mixes in most neighborhoods - however you still find areas where it can be mostly black, mostly white, mostly hispanic, etc. But, even in the areas where it is mostly one race - it isn't usually because of prejudice (occasionally it is exactly that - there are always a few bad apples) it is just the way it works out and where people find their comfort zones. For the most part, the various races in Houston get along, socialize and mix quite well. Most bars are open until 2 a.m. here. Aren't most parties always the same in the end? What exactly are you looking for that would make it different? You have the University of Houston system here and Texas Southern University, a historically black school that unfortunately has had its share of mismanagement. They are making some positive changes there finally that will benefit all of the students and that has been a long time coming so I hope they can continue to make improvements. However, if you are looking for a diverse student body population then you might want to try University of Houston. Also for private and pricey schools there are the privates - Rice University and University of St. Thomas.

Texas7 thank you so much for that information. Your right at the end of the night a party is still a party. I guess the party scene here in Detroit is all the same with the girls dancing all night and the guys standing on up against the wall. I'm 29 will be 30 in a month and I'm just looking to mingle with grown mature people who enjoy having a good time.

Does Houston have any poetry stops? I'm a huge writer love to write. I've always wanted to go to a Historcally Black College always and I will have to look into that. I look online at the university of texas an they offer some great programs.

Houston seems to be a lot more diverse than Detroit and I would love to have that mixture in my life, if and when I have children they can be exposed to many different cultures.

I write as well - but not poetry - freelance some locals mags and private press releases, etc. There are plenty of free writer workshops, social and networking groups, etc. in the area and I've seen several poetry as well. I don't ever attend so unfortunately I can't think of any of them but once I do, I'll send you a private message with the info. Sounds like you will enjoy the single professional scene in Houston - IF you move here - hope you love it.

Really! I did some freelance writing as well for detroitmetroixmix.com so I would love to get into some more free lance writings with some companies. I'm so planning on moving to Houston so all this information you are giving me is so helpful. If and when you do hear of any poetry settings please let me know. I hope I enjoy the single prefessional scene there because the scene here is dead. But that could be because I've lived here all my life.
