Why does SW Houston have really bad crime (at least from what I read in the newspaper) and Sugar Land is consistently listed as one of the safest places (50,000+ residents) to live in America? Geographically they do not seem that far away, but the crimes stats make them seem like bad people from Houston are just not allowed in. Sugar Land is not expensive to live in, so what is it about Sugar Land that makes it so safe?

I wonder that, too, because I live in Sugar Land. One thing I've noticed is that the Sugar Land police seem to be everywhere. Either there are a lot of them or they have learned how to give the impression of vigilance.
Have you been in Sugar Land? Once you leave the city, the vibe really changes, especially going north.

I have never been to Sugar Land (except as a small child). The most South I have ever traveled was the area around the Astrodome/Reliant/Six Flags area. Most of my Houston experiences were visiting people who lived in the woodlands.

Perhaps it's because there is a bit of a buffer zone between the true 'SW side' and the Sugar Land city limits. It's in unincorporated Ft Bend County. At worst, that zone really isn't all that bad (though definitely not great), and there is a lot of new & fairly nice development too.

I Think there are Condos in Grants Lake and Sweetwater...they may have a few for rent.
