All good comments by CoffeeMud. Rates and coverage vary widely by Company. Seek out an experienced local Independent Insurance Agency which typically can shop several Companies for you as a new client and at renewals. Wait until your mortgage company finds out (if you have one).

You need to shop around. We are paying $1,136 for a 3500 sq ft.

The age of your home will have an affect on price but you can still get decent rates.

Comparing your rate with the size of the house or market value is meaningless information. It would help to know what value you have insured the structure for.

You have to have home insurance if you have a mortgage. If you own the house outright then you're being very foolish if you don't have home insurance. You HAVE to be kidding.

I know people that don't insure their paid off homes, but they are only those that are living well below their means and can comfortably rebuild their structure if catastrophe hit without changing their lifestyle.

I generally prefer self insuring my assets, but not my home. I'd say that's a little crazy.
