Things to do in Houston
I am here in Houston with my husband and 11 year old little girl. I am thrilled that they like it here as much as I do- which cements our decision to relocate! (We are focusing on Kingwood.)
We are looking for suggestions as to what to do while we are here. What should we not miss? We will be here until Saturday.
Thanks!

1) Houston Museum of Natural Sciences (HMNS.org)
2) Galleria shopping (Westheimer Blvd.)
3) Kemah Boardwalk Entertainment (Kemah, TX)
4) Day trip to Galveston & free ride on ferry to Bolivar and back
Combine 3 & 4, possibly.
Enjoy!

We visit Houston especially to see Joel Osteen at Lakewood Church. We just love him!

Checkout -The Houston Theatre District -while you are down here.
(Opera, Theatre, Musicals, Ballet, Symphony and more, there are some broadway shows that tour thru as well...)
Also swing by the Museum District-
(They have a great childrens museum and science, and nice modern art one too)
The Zoo is also in the Museum district, so its easy to make a day of it. !
(but if you go to the zoo, go in the morning or early evening-its too hot middday!)
Also lots of people got out to NASA-

Check out Discovery Green park in downtown.
Herman Park which has a zoo, train, hill, garden, golf, etc.
Have a relaxing time at some local cafe/bars in the Heights or Rice Village.
If you like the city, then live inside the Loop if you can. Kingwood is further out as a suburb.

Go visit Astroworld (ride the Tx Cyclone once coined the best rollercoaster), then go see a game at the Astrodome (worlds 1st indoor stadium), then take the bullet train (15 min ride) down to Galveston (stay all day), visit Mercado del Sol (built as the authenic original mexican market square), then go visit the Houston Coliseum. Also, dont forget, the museum commemorating Peacock Records (1st major black own record label 1940-60s which predated Motown Records)
JOKE.....JOKE... these are just some of things or ideas etched in Houston's history that did not formulate into the future and progress of our great city by "the powers that be".

^^No kidding.
San Jacinto Monument where Texas won its independence.
I'd recommend a boat tour of the Ship Channel, but you have to schedule that pretty far in advance. They're usually booked.
A stroll through Ima Hogg's Bayou Bend can make for a lovely afternoon. She was known as The First Lady of Texas and is responsible for much of Houston's arts and culture scene.
They have kids days' and family nights on Buffalo Bayou throughout the summer, so check that out.
Take in a free show at Miller Outdoor Theatre in Hermann Park. Thursday would be a great time to go for the Juneteenth celebration. It's a state holiday and Texas tradition commemorating the abolition of slavery that originated in Galveston.
Go see the bats at the Waugh Street Bridge one evening.
Maybe take a walking/heritage home tour. There's a lot of hidden history here, but you have to seek it out.
Check out artshound, Houston Greeters, Houstonist, GHPA, Houston Press, HAIF, and Discover Houston Tours for more ideas.

There are many reasons. One reason it's "hidden" is because a lot of it has been razed, as houstonman alluded to above. Another is because most people, like yourself, live far out of the way of where the City of Houston began and are unaware of it. You work around it or near it, if you work downtown, then go home, unaware. Yet another reason is because of Houston's Southern roots, many of which were shed in the name of progress.
