Wizy,
Maybe you've tried this, but what about getting out of the area about 1-2 hours and doing some mountain biking in Huntsville State Park? http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/publicat...k0700_0715.pdf
Seems like there are opportunities for hiking, camping and canoeing as well, if you just drive a bit into the country.
Or for real "extreme sports" do a road bicycle ride, middle of the day for about 1-3 hours at 18+ MPH. Apply liberal amounts of sunscreen, bring copious amounts of water/energy drink. Great weight loss program. Do bring the phone to call 911 in case you "bonk"

hey thanks man. man, its really a desert out there huh. check out the bareness of these trails. I'm guessing most of these places dont have mountain bikes for rent. a bit low tech in these parts. i'm not in it for the exercise you see.

FYI jefre, ski resorts turn into summer destinations too even in the hills of the NE. this is the minimum i expect from every great city on the map. its 1hr from the big bad city. the NE has a bunch of these, no kidding. ahhh 4 seasons. and oh ski lifts becomes a bike lifts its just you and gravity = fun
Mountain Creek Ski Resort - Mountain Creek, Vernon Valley, New Jersey (http://www.mountaincreek.com/index.htm - broken link)

how about a waterslide? whats out best waterslide here?

As far as lakes, Lake Conroe as well as Clear Lake are terrific places for water sports(water sking, Jet skiing, sailing, etc.) also in Galveston.
Lake Houston offers camping, boat access, fishing and other services. Russell Grimes of Houston Public Works Lake Patrol (Lake Houston). “no swimming” signs at certain parts of the lake are more for liability reasons than pollution, because the city does not have designated swimming areas on the lake.

For waterparks, you should check out Splashtown in Spring. I haven't been in years, but I think it's about the same as it's always been.

I have friends who are downhill biking enthusiasts, and there are a lot of places in the Hill Country that cater to those folks. You should check out Hill Country State Natural Area: TPWD: Hill Country State Natural Area
It's a solid 4.5 hour drive, but worth it. There are bike trails around here, but no real elevation to speak of.

Original post by Nikku [No offense to Stephanie P., but I'm guessing that you're the bored housewife who is stuck in the suburbs. I'm also guessing that if you lived in a place like AZ or SoCal, you'd be just as unlikely to go hiking or camping (or anything outdoors) as you are here. It has nothing to do with the weather, but everything to do with attitude. I agree 100% with what others have said, if you are bored, it probably means you're a boring person.

First off, I never said I was bored. I said I was tired of the constant heat and humidity that Houston has. I too have lived many other places, states, and personally find Houston the least desirable. I love to be outdoors, having fun with my kids, or going for walks; but when I go outside here, I feel like I can't breathe. It's no fun.

You can defend your Houston, I'm glad that you do. But please realize that not everyone loves it like you do; some even hate it.
Just a difference of opinion. I have loved most of the places that I have lived, some I just tolerated. Here, I am miserable.
Please know I am not just sitting on my butt feeling sorry for myself. I have a plan to move within the next couple of years.
Please wish me luck.

thanks. will Spring people accept asians? (I really have to ask)

sorry to hijack the thread. but this is just proving a point that it will take a lot of energy to get some things done under the oppresive heat and undeniable boring nature of the houston area. people do need to vent sometimes.

i have taught atleast 5 FOB indians to snowboard, if you can imagine that LOL. yeah i'm that boring. LOL go ride up and down main street, mr excitement houstonians

Oh, I get it. So what you're saying is, it's not that you're bored, it's just that you're not having fun. Makes total sense to me.

One thing that is true of Houstonians in general is, they love the water. When you move somewhere, you should look around and see what the locals are doing to get ideas. If you really want to go outside and play with your kids, a good place to start would be the neighborhood pool, or even your front yard with a slip 'n slide and sprinklers as another poster suggested.
In fact, we'll be doing that at our 4th of July family bbq this year.

Wysiwyg, yeah, I don't think you'd be too out of place in Spring. There's Asians all over town, not just Alief!

O.K. here is the God's honest truth. If you cannot stand the summers in Houston you are, in fact, a huge wimp and need to move as soon as you possibly can.
