Yeah and look at the number for 2008: Vietnamese: 82,374

That is a massive population gain, nearly 33% of what it was before in 2000, and I am still waiting on official 2010 statistics to show an even larger gain.

yes, that is massive growth. But you said most vietnamese were new and that the population was negligible. But 64K didn't sound a minor presence to me.

By the look of little Saigon and Old China town you can tell that the presence of these two in Houston are far from recent.

Little Saigon is showing its age. It has been showing its age for a while

There was actually a thread on that. Yes Houston may have had a minor presence beforehand but it's immigration patterns are as of recent for many if not all Asian groups.

Being Asian I can tell you most are first generation and new to the country. Like someone already said, the Fresh off the Boat kind. There is nothing wrong with that, diversity is diversity, but the fact of the matter is, Houston is growing in diversity and different kind of people are coming in for economical reasons and affordable lifestyle with big city amenities. Yeah the ethnic groups aren't new for Houston but the increased population for those groups are as of recent.

I want to give Houston another 10 years for it to reflect pure integrated diversity. Pockets of Houston like the North & East sides are lacking in it, which is fine, I can see it one day being a hotbed for new communities.

But right now, Houston is getting there, and faster than anything else in the American South at that, but it is not there yet, like the Bay Area or New York City. (being two examples of purely integrated diverse population centers in every corner of the metropolitan area)
I kinda disagree. According to my parents, when my parents (Vietnamese) emigrated here in 1981, there were plenty of us here already and that grew throughout the decade. I can't speak for the other nationalities, but are presence here was definitely not established within the last decade or even during the 90s. Midtown used to be where a lot of Vietnamese hung out until New Chinatown was established and Midtown started gentrifying. Some of are presence is still there with some of the street signs in Vietnamese. Houston had the 3rd largest Vietnamese population in 2000, and will likely keep that title. Only LA and the Bay Area can lay claim that they have a larger population, but that's natural given California's location and history of attracting Asians.

I do agree that are Asian population is growing quite fast due to many Californians (as well as other states) moving here for economical reasons and will probably continue like that until California fixes itself. We definitely aren't established as the California cities, NYC, Hawaii, and Seattle, but we are making some big strides.

I don't know for sure. I only knew about the Vietnamese because one of my best friends in Undergrad was Vietnamese and he would take us around
This site says it was 70K in 2005 for Harris and Fort Bend:

EDIT: Wow it says half of the Indians in Texas live in the Houston Metro. About a quarter of that in Fort Bend

Indian: 77,220
Pakistani: 18,316

For Pakistani's Chicago, New York City, & Houston are the largest presence.

In this case, Texas is looking hot for Pakistani immigrants. It goes toe to toe with California.

Wow, Houston has more Vietnamese and Koreans than New York.

More Chinese than San Diego and almost as many as Seattle

More Indians than Seattle, San Diego and Orange County combined

and all of that from the last census. I can't wait to see the new numbers.

We were only a few thousand away from San Fransisco, San Diego, Oakland and San Jose for Koreans in the last census.

Houston's Asian population 10 years ago was not as wimpy as you guys made it sound
The only Asian population that was small was Japanese

Houston definately does not have more Koreans than New York. Houston's Korean community is the third largest in the South after Atlanta and Dallas. New York is number two in the US after LA.

Houston has a small Korean community. Its not even half the size of DFW's and its about 1/3 the size of Atlanta's. Its nowhere near the Bay Area. As of 2007, Greater Houston had around 15,000 Koreans. DFW had just over 30,000 and Metro Atlanta had about 45,000. New York has about 175,000.

Houston does have a very significant Vietnamese community (obviously).
