Absolutely not true. I would bet $975,000 that there are about zero basements in River Oaks.

Let me rephrase that it was not a true basement like the Eastern MD, VA, DC areas. This was just about 3 feet sinking floor for supposively a theatre room design.

My husband went to high school with a kid who lived in River Oaks. He says his house had a basement that had a wine cellar.
So I guess I can report there is at least one basement in RO.

Eh-eh, I've roamed around in Ken Lay's River Oaks home and another oil rich golf course view home and I didn't see any basement. Perhaps I missed the secret door to the dungeon.

Fill it with concrete. If basements were a feasible/affordable/practical option here, we'd all have them. Did you just think we had a personal vendetta against basements? Hehe.

Actually, there are basement homes in River Oaks. I'm a native Houstonian but back in 2000 or so my parents made me go on a Houston city-tour. They were bored and it was free. Anyway, I remember the tourguide talking about all the fancy homes in River Oaks and there were a couple she mentioned that had bowling alleys in the basements. Of course, I can't prove this but that's what the tourguide said as we were driving past the neighborhood.

Why anybody would want a basement home in Houston is beyond me. Yikes!

It's possible, but it's not practical, because it will require substantially water-proof walls and floors, much more so than up north. Concrete isn't, by nature, water-proof without being carefully sealed. It's just not practical to do here, which is why it isn't done. Now, if you're rich enough to own a bowling alley, then practicality is irrelevant.
