We do live in an upstairs unit--however, two years ago, we put $1000 worth of insulation in our attic (to bring it to R40 standards) and felt the effects immediately--our condo was much cooler. We also put in a brand new low-e sliding glass door which you can definitely feel a difference. So how is it we have increased our kW usage by about 2/3 since then? I have no freaking clue... We've attempted to contact the electric provider (Constellation) but they will not speak directly with homeowners. They direct us back to Creative Property Management. *sigh* We have spoken with our prop mgr, and she said she has received several complaints and that we should go to the meeting on Monday. I hope we can get there. It's so frustrating!

I do keep my place cool (about 72-73) but I've always done that. How often should freon be checked? Maybe I need to do that.

Refrigerant should be checked once a year. Usually you can get a $129/yr deal where the techs come out and check that (fill up to 2 lbs @ no charge), and clean the coils on your condensor and evaporater once a year in March and give you a report... oh yeah, and clean/check the furnace in November.

Keeping it at 72-73 definitely keeps your bills high. I'll bet on many days you're burning that thing 23 hours a day. The systems aren't designed to cool more than 18-20 degrees below ambient outdoor temperature. But anyway, this time it really sounds like the Centerpoint meter reader was being lazy/funny. I've had more than one problem receiving a $450 gas bill in the middle of the summer. Centerpoint reads both electric and gas IIRC and they have some true idiots reading those meters.

I have no idea how some of you are getting these rates uless you are locked in a contract. All companies electicity prices have gone up since the price of natural gas has gone up. This site lists al of the competition.

What are y'all paying per kilowatt hour?
we locked in last fall with Direct Energy at 12.50 on a fixed year contract. I hate to think what its gonna be when the contract is up in October

dynowatt last month 15.9kwh this month 25.9kwh bill was $1600. Best rate found was with Reliant for 24mth 14.8kwh in nov 15.8 with $295 fee if cancel. I figure better to pay the fee if the rates do decrease in the future.

$1600!!! i would check your AC or something and make sure your neighbor did not figure a way to tap into your electricity . Unless you are living in a 16,000+ SF mansion. Or running a blending plant in your garage. I can't see how it could be that high? i have a relative in a 8000+SF home in Sugar Land, and he said his highest bill was around $770.
