Maybe it's all this new "diversity" in Pearland over the past several years that's scaring folks, rather than crime itself. Who knows. I haven't seen anything that strikes me as bad. Of course Walmart tends to attract lower income folk. But that doesn't mean they're going to rob you. Most are just trying to shop just like you and not really paying you any mind.

I think this comes closer to the truth than many would like to admit. Well said!

Thanks for that insight, it seems like people are afraid of black people shopping at night. I love going to the HEB Plus and the Walmart at night all the fine sistas that shop till they drop and people are friendly and speak to you and that Pearland Town Center is a hot spot, no more Galleria for me.
I guess I would feel the same if I was in The Woodlands or Katy at night.

LOL...I got a good laugh over this one. I like to shop at night too. But I just hate crowds and there's less people at night...haha.

Wal-Mart will always have people cussing, farting, destroying merchandise, smearing turds in the dressing/restrooms, etc. But people fighting, yelling, shoving, and throwing Ramen noodles on each other (and you & your wife) inside Wal-Mart is the new diversity that Pearland has been experiencing. Or at least at the Silverlake Wal-Mart...

It doesn't matter if they're black or not. The issue is simply white, black, brown or purple... trash is trash! You may celebrate people from the hoods, trailer parks, barrios, or freeway underpasses forcing their "diverse" ways on you. But others (of all races) who are just trying to run their errands in relative peace do not appreciate it.

Missouri City/Stafford to the west, Hobby area residents to the north, Cullen residents to the East. And Silverlake? Don't get me started. It's a haven for Katrina's victims. I feel very unsafe shopping in Silverlake. Wal-Mart? My husband doesn't like me going at all...with or without him, no matter the time of day. AND I LIVE JUST 2 MILES FROM A STORE THAT I WOULDN'T SHOP IN FOR FEAR OF BEING A VICTIM OF CRIME--OR AT LEAST RACISM! I now hate it here. We are so bummed because we really do love SCR, and we have awesome neighbors. But I would have never imagined that when we were buying a home in Pearland that we should have done a better job checking out the surrounding areas. I'm really, really disappointed. To be honest, I haven't heard of any recent criminal activity. I did hear about the pregnant lady at Target who almost got carjacked. There was a couple in my neighborhood that were forced into their car by gunmen so they could make them withdraw money at the ATM. The house at the front of our neighborhood (which was/maybe still is owned by Willie Tavaris) was broken into. Several vehicles in my subdivision were vandalized, including the garage door openers being stolen from the vehicles. That stuff is just on the west side. I've really plugged my ears to any more crime. I feel bad raising my girls here. I get nervous when someone knock on the door and my husband is not home. And I am NOT typically a worrywart. I'm the girl that never locks the door usually. When the economy improves, and the housing slump improves, we will be one of the first out of here.

Oh, and I LOVE MY HEB! But honestly, I felt I was a victim of racism there last night (I am white). That has never happened to me there before. I just feel icky about it, ya know?

Anyway, I know this thread was about crime, but I just wanted to give my 2 cents on the whole feeling of the area.

Thanks.
Really? I'm not trying to be funny but how do you know they're "Katrina" victims? I live on the west side of Pearland and I love it. Yes, there's diversity, but most of the schools in Pearland are still excellent.

I absolutely agree with you, trash is trash. Personally I've only been to that Walmart maybe 4 times since I've lived here. I'm not much of a Walmart shopper(it's too dang big, unorganized, and takes me forever to find what i'm looking for). But I haven't had any issues the few times I've been there. I just don't think we should judge an entire neighborhood based on what's going on at Wally World.

Just to add a comment:
The incidents in Pearland I described happened 1-2 years before Katrina hit. Sometimes dialects and mannerisms are pretty obvious, but it's not fair to say only the Katrina evacuees are acting this way.

On a side note, I've stopped for food & goods multiple times in what some would call ''the hood'' and I've found people there are generally much more respectful than this new Pearland demographic.

Thanks for being all-inclusive. I feel left out when people refer to "trash" and don't mention my demographic.
