It's a shame to have that "taking over" attitude when this country should come together in unity. And everyone should have an equal opportunity for a nice education and a good life regardless of race. And the same goes for criminals - they should go straight to jail - regardless of race - yes there are criminals of all ethnicities and they should all be regarded the same. Gentrification has hurt of lot of poor, mostly black and some Hispanic residents in the inner city as the large townhomes go up next door to them and the tax rate skyrockets and pushes them out of their lifelong home ... actually quite sad. This isn't a forum to throw out racist digs at people it is a friendly and informative forum on cities with some friendly and driven debates at times.

hmmm
LOL, I wasn't going to say anything either but apparently I'm not the only one who felt this way. But I immediately knew also when she said she was a victim of racism and speaking of "katrina victims. I'm still trying to figure out what she's talking about. Silverlake? Cullen folks? Not that she's calling out groups of people by the areas of Pearland that they live in. And talking about the Southwest over here and the South side of Houston over there. Hmmm. You mean the areas that are considered predominantly african american or hispanic? I don't understand. This is HOUSTON, Texas. You are going to find people of all creeds, colors, educational backgrounds, etc. It's called Diversity! And Trust me. Pearland is NOT that diverse compared to other parts of Houston. Take this from a girl who is female, african american and asian who attended Texas A&M University. LOL. I've learned what Diversity is, or should I say is NOT, for the rest of my life and HOUSTON is pretty diverse but Pearland has not reached that point by far. If people don't belong where they live, they wouldn't live there, I mean, someone has to pay the mortgages or rent to stay there right? And I stay near the "cullen" area and trust me, if anyone can afford the rent that I pay to stay in a 2 bedroom 2 bathroom apartment on that part of town (which is more than some people's mortgages that I know of who stay in SCR), then well, maybe they act like trash in your eyes but they must have their act together when It comes to working because it's EXPENSIVE!
Ok, enough said. I LOVE Pearland! I've NEVER felt unsafe. I lived in College Station for 12 years prior to moving here and I feel safer in Pearland than I do in that small town.

Your post makes you sound a little racist yourself, so when you say that you were a victim of racism and that you are white... maybe you got a taste of your own medicine? Oh and btw, DUH...we all could have guessed that you were white!

Well, there have been 2 home invasions in the Silverlake subdivision in the last week.
I was trying to find that old thread where someone was claiming Silverlake was a gang haven. I couldn't find it (maybe it was not this forum where I read that. HAIF maybe?). Anyway, the recent crime trend there isn't pretty.
In a side note, the Pearland PD has sent email alerts that home robberies are on the increase for 2009.
Everybody be careful out there!

A relative works in a small retail shop in the older, main part of Pearland. Within the past month, she was telling co-workers that she was going to go by Town Center after work and a sheriff's officer who was in the store at the time told her "you really don't want to be going over there at all and particularly not by yourself."

And Silverlake? Don't get me started. It's a haven for Katrina's victims. I feel very unsafe shopping in Silverlake.
Excuse me, but what do you have against those who were hurt by Katrina? We moved here after Katrina, not Silvelake, but nearby. No one in my family has ever been in trouble with the police for anything more than a traffic ticket. I resent the characterization of all Katrina victims as criminals

While that may be true, there have recently been several crimes in Pearland and Friendswood that worry me because they came close together in time and these are pretty close to my own home in Southwyck. We are forming a neighborhood watch and people are being pretty careful.

As it stands now, there are no leads in the case, Baker said. The male suspect was wearing a mask and a jogging suit. In addition to bounding and gagging the female victim in her closet, the man stole electronics and clothing.
The woman was home alone at the time, after her husband and son went to work.

The crime in Silverlake appears to be a *spree* rather than an increase in random crimes. While the police can't talk, the reports I have seen points to the same group in the crimes there. The fact is that Silverlake is mostly safe. The biggest problems are in areas that have easy *in and out* to 288 which is not true of most of the community. If a burglar got into my subdivision, they probably would not be able to figure out how to get out quickly since there are tons of twists and turns and cul de sacs before you get to a major road and the major road is not 288.
I don't know anything about Alief at all, so I can't compare the two areas.

i agree. My husbands parents live right in front of the couple in Silverlake who got attacked by a hammer, in the Summerfield section. They have lived their since the homes where built, 9 years ago. And have never had a problem. I don't think they've ever had problems in those 9 years.
We have also lived here for the past 2 years and consider Pearland really safe except for those incidents. I believe those 3 incidents where probably more than we've had in the last year.
I don't see how Silverlake or any of West Pearland is a gang haven. I don't see that at all. Regardles, most of the crime is probably coming from the other side of the beltway. Criminals go for the easiest and probably nearest targets they know.
