Default Nurses moving to Houston

Two graduate nurses are moving to Texas from Michigan in August. We are wondering where would be the safest place but near Texas medical center and other hospitals. I am really nervous about the crime and being girls, we just want to feel safe. Also, does anyone know what the best cell phone coverage is down there?

Thanks

So, what is your budget?

Also, since you are single (although with a roommate), it may be best to look around in the city. Do be careful about the apartment complexes you choose, as several complexes in parts of the city are run-down.

Some of the complexes around the tony neighborhoods to the west of the Texas Medical Center (the Southgate/West University/Bellaire area) are considered to be good. Also, the Texas Medical Center offers its own apartment housing to employees; the Laurence H. Favrot Tower Apartments; only medical professionals and other staff members of the Texas Medical Center and their dependents may live in the apartments.

See http://www.texmedctr.tmc.edu/root/en...ing/Favrot.htm

The tower is located in the heart of the TMC.

Are you girls cute?

For safety, you might want to consider some suburbs like Friendswood, Pearland, Clear Lake, Sugarland, etc. Some parts of these places are close to downton but without the high cost and crime.

Visitor 007, Unless they worked in those areas or had close, close friends or family, I would not recommend for singles to move most of those areas.

There may be pockets of "friendly for singles" areas in those places, but I do not know them off of my head. In any event, they wanted to work in the Texas Medical Center, so those areas are NOT close to the TMC.

I do not want to see the ladies unsafe, but they shouldn't be bored and/or faced with a frustrating commute either!

I would have them look for Favrot and some other well-maintained complexes in central Houston first.

Other than clubs, what exactly is there in the city that you cannot find in the suburbs? I'm sure the suburbs have restaurants, shopping malls, movie theathers, etc.

If these young nursese are really clubbing chicks, they can still drive to downtown on weekends.

Central Houston has easy, easy access to high culture venues (operas, ballets, and theatrical plays in Downtown and plays at the Hermann Park's Miller Outdoor Theatre), the zoo (located in Hermann Park, near the TMC), many quaint non-chain restaurants in various parts of town (especially around Montrose, Midtown, and Upper Kirby). Rice Village has some interesting stores, including an old barber shop and a "Five and Dime".

Also, the city sports the Greenway Theatre, the River Oaks Theatre, and the Angelika, which play "art-house" films. Also, living in Central Houston makes them close to the Audio/Video Plus, which has a huge library of old and off-the-wall films.

Also, they should move into apartments anyway upon first arriving so they can figure out which neighborhoods they like and then move into a neighborhood when they like it. Since the Medical Center owns the Favrot complex, and the complex has a security access system, the girls should be in good hands.

Now, if they wanted chain restaurants, typical grocery stores, etc. - None of those amenities are far away. Randall's, Kroger, Whole Foods, and H-E-B offer regular and upscale stores around the area. H-E-B Central Market and Whole Foods offer incredibly obscure and DELICIOUS (albiet expensive) food; both the River Oaks Whole Foods and the Central Market stores cater to the wealthy River Oaks crowd. Some nearby areas offer grocery stores that cater to Hispanic and Asian markets, and if the girls wanted to try more obscure Hispanic and Asian foods, they may shop that those stores.

The big plus for living in the Favrot Towers (if their application is accepted) is that they may walk to work - Good for the body!

I think it's inappropriate for you to talk about their bodies. Just because they are nurses, young, and famales, doens't make it right for you to objectify them.

Visitor, you missed the point. Good for the body = good for health. I was not referring to anything in that manner.

Anyway, it's a good idea to figure out your apartment budget so you guys can use an apartment locator.

Moderator cut: personal attack

For the girls, use online to check for apartments. Once you get there, maybe stay in a hotel/motel for a day or two and check out the apartment list you have and then make a decision.
