Default New home builders

In about a year we are looking to buy a home in Katy within one of the planned communities that are already being built (you know the ones where you can customize but the actual blueprint is already made). Which builders should we consider in what neighborhoods? We have small children (1 1/2 and 4) so schools are important! Thanks!

LJarrett is on a distinguished road
I guess it depends on how much you want to spend? There are great schools in South Katy. Of course, anything in Cinco Ranch, Seven Lakes, Woodcreek Reserve, Firethorne. New homes in the area go from the low 200's and up. What is your budget, how much space do you need, what amenities do you like? There's alot to choose from and many reputable builders.

We are looking for at least a 4 bdrm/2 1/2 bath with gameroom, at least 2700 sq ft. Don't really want to exceed $280,000.

I bought a house with Meritage and had a good experience. Try to avoid using their lender/title company if you can cause they are shady as hell. Luckily I used a VA loan and they weren't able to screw me with a ton of junk fees like they wanted to.

Check a site called Implode o Meter in regards to builders. So many have gone under leaving subdivisions in peril. Mertiage is mentioned on the forum.
Several the BBB here had with good ratings went south and left homes half built. As always check HOBB.org and HADD.com.

I know you hate all builders but Meritage is not mentioned as going under on that website.

People have to live somewhere. Are there any builders you like?

What's wrong with an exisiting house in today's day?
Unless people do their homework diligently and know a builder is financially secure no one knows if they will go under. Locally, some Houston news stations ran reports of subdivisions half built had the builder go under leaving new residents with a disaster.
The Implode site is giving valuable information from those working for these builders. If people choose not to use the info to their advantage that is their business.

Nothing at all, but existing houses were built by someone at some point, too.

Not trying to argue with you...I really wanted to know if there are any builders you recommend as you seem knowledgeable in this area.
