Default Looking to Move to Houston in summer 2009

Hello Houston:

Family of 5 (three children/two adults) looking to move to Houston. What neighborhoods are close to downtown Houston? Currently live in NY, but originally from CA. Looking for safe neighborhood with decent schools.

Been doing a lot of research online and plan to make a visit in Oct 2008. Where should I start? Thanks for any feedback.

If you have a lot to spend on a home - you might try West University.

Since you're originally from Calif just like me, you'd probably like Sugarland. It reminds me more of home than most of the cities in Houston. However, Kingwood and The Woodlands are both beautiful.

Generally, the closer you get to downtown (you'll be working downtown, right?) Houston, the more the house costs. So, you might want to post here a $$$ number as to the maximum you want to pay for a home. Then, you'll get more replies/advice I think. The suburbs of Sugar Land, Pearland, The Woodlands, Kingwood and a few others are most commonly mentioned but are not necessarily the best and only places to live. Closer in West University, Bellaire, Memorial and a few others are good places to live but on the more expensive side. River Oaks, if you have lots of $$$.

This web site Houston Real Estate - Houston Homes, Houston Home Value and Houston Relocation will give you some ideas as to the home costs in the Houston area.

I think you must be talking about not the best places to live as far as a commute but those you listed are some of Houston's better suburbs.

To the O/P why not check out Bellaire West U, Rice Military, Third Ward, Montrose, or Afton Oaks areas? Those are relatively close to downtown but i'm with everyone else, it might help if you could post a range on how much you want to spend.

Traffic: always moderate to heavy. go here to look at travel times: Houston Speed and Travel Time Reports. Houston crime: go to the HPD web site or Apartment Crime Locator | Crime Mapping for Houston for crime maps of any location within the city of Houston.
