Depends on where you are commuting to in the city. Some of the biggest employment centers (uptown, downtown, and med center) in Houston are in the 610 loop. Usually 59 isn't TOO bad during rush hour compared to I10 and 290. You will be looking at least a 40+ minute commute from door to door to uptown/downtown.

My wife just took a job in Sugar Land and we will be moving down there soon since I now work from home and there's no need for us to live near downtown any longer. (not to mention better schools than HISD and bigger houses)

She's been "testing" different commute routes every day at different times and generally speaking it's about 35-45 minutes between 90A and downtown no matter which route you take. It might be slightly better once I-10 is finished in both directions (via Beltway 8) but it's pretty consistent at just over a half hour.

I live in Telfair. The Telfair to downtown commute via 59S at 7 am is about 40-45 minutes.
via HOV it is about 30-35 minutes. after 830am it is also about the same time.

Update: 31 minutes today @ 7:07 AM. 3 minutes to 59. 28 minutes to my office entrance in the CBD in downtown via HOV.
