Lake Livingston Livin'
Hey everyone - My husband & I are considering of relocating to the Huntsville / Lake Linvingston area from Jackson, MS. We've always liked the outdoors and water sports. And thought it would be relaxing and neat to live on a lake. Especially now that the kids are gone now. But we've never lived on one, just camped on one.
I'm looking for some feed back from anyone. I have some questions like....What's the clarity of Lake Livingston? Is one side better looking than the other? Is it well maintained? What's it like living on the lake?
I was looking at available properties in that area, and was shocked to see just how many properties ARE available. (quite a few-over 150 to be exact). It made me wonder WHY? Why are there so many homes available and I also noticed that the properties have been on the market for awahile. Kinda makes you say hmmmmmmm!!!
Penny for your thoughts!!

Personally, I really like Livingston, the lake and the town. The BIG ISSUE coming up is the TransTexas Corridor, Gov. Perrys mammoth (halfmile wide!) highway-railway that will slice and dice up Texas, to accomodate the wishes and profits of the Mexicans and multinationals. The TTC will supposedly come very near Livingston, and will irreversibly change the area. I personally think it is an unmitigated disaster, but thats just my opinion... Whatever the case, Livingston will be greatly affected.

Lake Livingston never really took off the way lake Conroe did and property sells slowly there. That said if your buying long term you can get a good deal. Personally I don't care for Livingston but to each his own.

southestteaxas- Please tell me more about the TTC. How will the Livingston area be effected. Where could I go (website?) to get more information. When you say near, how near? Won't the traffice help help the economy in the area? Tell me more about the lake, if you could.
chris_ut-Why don't you care for Lake Linvingston? Lake Conroe seems like a much smaller lake than Livingston. Usually the smaller lakes have more restrictions and there isn't enough room for everyone to "play" and enjoy. What are the differences between the two lakes?
How accessible is the lake to amenities? I also saw a few businesses in the lake area for sale. Campgrounds, stores, etc. is this a bad sign? I really would have thought that the whole area would do well, seeings how Lake Livingston is the 2nd largest body of water in the whole state of Texas!
And it looks like Huntsville is a bigger city than Livingston. Well at least population wise. But I just found out that there is a BIG prison in Huntsville! So I bet that those housed at the prison is included in the population count. What is Huntsville like other wise?

Lake Livingston is large but many parts are not usable due to tall trees in the lake that make it hazardous for boating. A while back the water level was way down and they did go in and cut a number of trees so this is not as big an issue as it was. There are not much in the way of amenities or shopping around Livingston so its more of a "get away to the woods" type of area as opposed to Conroe where you could live full time and have everything you need at your fingertips. Prices reflect that difference.
Huntsville is mostly college kids at Sam Houston (read students who couldn't get into UT, A&M or UH) and people that work at the 20 or so prisons (not just one, most of texas prisoners are housed in Huntsville) around town. Also not my favorite place.

KeepTexasMoving.com and Corridorwatch.org are the two main places for info. Be advised that KeepTexasMoving.com is the states propaganda site, full of spin and slanted information. Corridorwatch.org is the "anti" site to the TTC. If it comes through, profound changes will occour wherever its at. It is by no means just limited to affecting Livingston. Seems 90-95% of Texans are against it, but Perry, the Mexicans, and the multinationals don't care what Texas thinks.

Please tell me more about the prisons of Huntsville. I guess thats why the population is so much higher than Linvingston. When I looked at both cities, I was surprised at the difference in populations, and they didn't look much difference in size. But it makes sense now, because I'm sure they include all the people housed at the prisons in with the cities population. Just how many prisons are there? Are there many escapes from the prisons? I don't mind living near a prison. Actually I currently live within 5 miles of one of the major housing facilities in Mississippi. It hasn't been all that bad.

I think there are 7 total prisons around town and then the main one in the center of town which is where the death row inmates are kept and executed (Walls Unit).

djdski3, Livingston is a nice big lake...And there are a lot of people living there full time. The reason more people live on lake Conroe is because it's so close to Houston and a lot of the people work in Houston.
To me Conroe is to crowded..
I also think Livingston is a better fishing lake. Just my thoughts. I have only fished Conroe twice and didn't think much of it.
I have a small place at Livingston, I have been thinking about selling due to my health..
